The war between the United States President Donald Trump and social media giant Twitter have started again. By this time, Trump demands his name to be removed on the Twitter trending hashtags after saying it’s illegal.’ Why is Trump afraid of the hashtags, but keeps using his official Twitter account?
Trump is ‘disgusted’ by hashtags
On Monday, July 27, the United States President Donald Trump tweeted a post saying he felt disgusted on Twitter trendings nowadays since his name is always on the top 20. The President called it ‘unfair’ and ‘illegal’ as there was never a ‘good one’ trending about him on Twitter.
“So disgusting to watch Twitter’s so-called “Trending”, where sooo many trends are about me, and never a good one. They look for anything they can find, make it as bad as possible, and blow it up, trying to make it trend. Really ridiculous, illegal, and, of course, very unfair!” says Trump.
The President does not specify which trending hashtags have been hurting his eyes. He does not also say whether he will do something about Twitter’s algorithm when it comes to trending or not. So for now, it appears like he’s ranting his complaints on Twitter, using his Twitter account himself, ironically.
Does Twitter really sabotage Trump for being always on the trending line?
As of now, Twitter has not yet said anything about the tweet of the President. However, as explained on its website, trending hashtags are not based on nothing. An algorithm is the one in charge to pick out which is the most talked-about topic in the Twitterverse, as of the moment.
“Trends are determined by an algorithm and, by default, are tailored for you based on who you follow, your interests, and your location. This algorithm identifies topics that are popular now, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help you discover the hottest emerging topics of discussion on Twitter,” says the Twitter website.
Half reaction on Twitter
Trump’s tweet was already retweeted and commented on by over 40,000 accounts. Though Trump demands change on Twitter, half of the people on the social media chose to fight the President by calling him ‘crying baby’ for being too sensitive about the issue.
“Looks like most people are talking about how much Trump sucks and how he is destroying our country. Deal with it snowflake. It’s the truth,” says CEO Eugene Gu.
“You know what’s “ridiculous” and “disgusting to watch?” Trump is more concerned about Twitter trends than a pandemic that has now killed more than 147,000 Americans,” said another Twitter user.
Not all comments were against his tweet.
“More proof that Twitter is a publisher, choosing which topics to insert on the Trending List and which to censor. Another reason they should lose their section 230 protection,” said the user.
Comedian-actor Terrence Williams also said “We the people know you are a good man and great President. We don’t care what Twitter thinks.”
