It’s the end of laptop business for Toshiba.
Toshiba has officially left the laptop business and ending their 35 years of producing one of the reliable brands for handy laptops. By this, they have sold their remaining minority PC business stake to Sharp. They have sold around 80.1% stake worth 36 million to Sharp.
Sharp renamed Toshiba’s PC business to Dynabook. They have also exercised their right to purchase the remaining 19.1% of shares last June, according to Toshiba’s released statement last August 4, after the deal between the two companies was completed.
“As a result of this transfer, Dynabook has become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sharp,” Toshiba said in a statement.
Toshiba’s PC business History
Toshiba made their first PC laptop in 1985 and named it T1100. It has a 3.5-inch floppy drive, boasted internal rechargeable batteries, and 256K of memory. According to ComputerWorld’s 20-year research of the T1100, they noted that the Toshiba executives were unclear about the portable computer progression, but eventually began selling the T1100 for around $2,000.
In the early 1990s, Toshiba was among the top PC manufacturers, but as more the competitions become tighten, the harder for them to offer unique features that would make it stand out. After the PC business being sold its stake to Sharp, Toshiba’s shares of the PC market had decreased from its 2011 peak of 17.7 million PCs sold to about 1.4 million in 2017, according to Reuters report.
