The milestone is long but worth it for Dave Clark.
On Friday, Amazon announced their new Retail CEO for Worldwide Consumer Dave Clark to their operations after Jeff Wilke decided to step down next year. This promotion will lead Clark to be one of three CEOs at Amazon. And they will be managing the company alongside its founder Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy, the cloud head.
His new job is to oversee everything from Amazon’s core retail business to its massive shipping and logistics arm, which also includes Whole Foods. Amazon’s retail business has been notably garnered $340 billion worth of products last year.
Clark has been giving his efforts for the past two decades to climb on the corporate ladder. These efforts were then recognized by Amazon.
According to Jeff Bezos, “I can’t think of someone more suited to step into Jeff’s role than Dave Clark.”
“Those of you who have worked with Dave know his incredible passion for serving customers and supporting our employees – I am excited for him to lead our teams and continue innovating for customers.I tested him,” he added.
Also based on Craig Berman’s statement, a former Amazon executive who worked closely with both Wilke and Clark, “Those who have worked with Clark describe him as a charismatic and visionary leader, who can be almost irrationally demanding at times. But his long experience in logistics, where Wilke also cut his teeth, and growing responsibilities that in recent years has expanded to include not just shipping and warehouses, but also marketing, Prime, and robotics, make him a perfect successor for the job.”
Many have questioned Clark’s promotion, for his background is quite unlikely, unrelated to his job at Amazon.
Dave Clark didn’t graduate from some prestigious Ivy League universities or worked at big companies like Apple and Tesla. He graduated from Auburn University, where he was a tuba-playing music major.
He was also a previous instructor at Florida middle school before joining Amazon in 1999.
Dave Clark is the newly appointed Amazon Retail CEO by 2020.
