Dark mode Google Maps is finally here! The update follows a string of updates that Google has implored in order to improve user experience by giving pretty useful updates.
Dark mode. Over the span of the past year, Google has slowly been updating all of its apps with a brand new dark mode setting. The company has actually recently released the dark mode support for other apps like Google Docs, Google Translate, Google Slides, and also Google Sheets. Google Meets?
Now, the company is also preparing to bring the most coveted dark mode option for the menus and settings of the widely used Google Maps. While the dark theme for the whole navigation was already released back in 2018, the app still did not really include the option for users to turn the dark mode on in the menus and settings page.
How to activate Google Maps dark mode
According to a tweet that was recently posted by Alessandro Paluzzi or @alex193a, the company is now finally working on adding the long-awaited universal dark mode toggle to this specific application.
As shown in the screenshots that were shared within the tweet, this new dark theme option for Google Maps can easily be found when you look at the Appearance section. The Appearance section is located in the app settings which also shouldn’t be too hard to find.
Tapping on this option brings up a brand new pop-up window that includes three options, the default, the dark theme, and the light theme. Activation is as easy as selecting the dark theme option and also tapping the save button in order to make sure that the app’s own white UI elements turn to dark gray which is really close to black. The text will also obviously change from black to white and voila, you’ll have a dark theme activated!
The app’s default
The Default to this device theme option, on one hand, will allow your Google Maps to automatically pick a particular system-wide theme that is also currently in use. This means that if you are also using the particular system-wide dark theme, this should affect the app and it will automatically conform to the current theme that is based on your global settings.
As of now, it is still very unclear as to which version of this app will soon introduce the new dark theme settings. Paluzzi has actually managed to manually enable the feature in the 10.5.0 version of the app, but surprisingly, it isn’t really available for users at the moment.
Although activating this feature is easy, you’ll have to wait until the feature actually becomes available for public use.
The dark mode advantage
One major advantage of the dark theme is how it is able to protect the eyes from sustaining damage from staring too long at the computer. Although radiation still makes it way to the eyes, with dark mode, the amount of radiation is then limited.
The dark mode is being adapted in a lot of new applications in order to safely protect the users’ eyesight and make things easier to look at.
