We detail all the products and updates we can expect from Apple from their October event. The new iPhone 12 is a sure shot but some things remain unknown.
Apple’s second fall product launch event is taking place in California today and you can watch it on YouTube or on Apple’s website live from 10 AM PT or 1 PM ET. What’s going to be new in today’s event? There will be iPhones of course but anything else? Macs and iPads possibly. HomePod Mini and AirPods too. Read on to find out.
Apple’s ‘Hi, Speed’ Tagline
Apple’s tagline for the October 13 event seems to suggest Apple’s latest range of iPhones will come with 5G support. Apple iPhones, if they support 5G, won’t be the first smartphones to do so. Moreover, 5G networks are rare in Apple’s core markets of America, China and Europe. 5G is even rarer elsewhere in the wrold
All About Apple iPhone 12
Today’s Apple launch event is about iPhone 12 just as last month’s event was focused on Apple Watch and iPad. The iPhone 12 range is likely to comprise four models. These are likely to be: iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. A ‘Mini’ branded iPhone is going to be a first.
But Apple can always surprise us.
Apple Launch Event – What to Expect in The New iPhone 12
The new iPhone 12 range will come with new design, new features, and new capabilities. What could those be?
Design-wise, the iPhone 12 range might take after iPads more with flat edges.
Size-wise, iPhone 12s could get both smaller as well as larger — from a 5.4-inch model all the way to a 6.7-inch model
Capability-wise, 5G support will be the likely clear focus. Apple will likely offer 5G support across the entire iPhone 12 range, depending on the availability of 5G networks. When a 5G signal is available, the iPhone will latch on to that. When 5G is not available, the iPhone will still use 4G LTE. The iPhone 12s might support both sub-6GHz 5G as well as mmWave 5G. OLED screens will be standard on the iPhone 12s but 120Hz refresh rates are not guaranteed.
More product features are likely to include iPhone cases and wireless chargers with built-in magnets. Those chargers might be named MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Charger Duo, per a well-known leaker.
The storage options are likely to range from 64GB all the way up to 512GB. The most expensive iPhone 12 on offer will cross the $1,000 barrier at $1099.
LiDAR sensors are likely one cool new feature that can only be expected in the higher range iPhone 12.
Apple Launch Event – Smaller HomePod and Over-Ear AirPod Headphones
Apart from the iPhone line-up, we might see a smaller HomePod in today’s Apple launch event. This would be less expensive than the $299 HomePod currently on offer from Apple. The HomePod Mini might cost only $99.
An entirely new product that Apple is working on is over-ear headphones. It can be noted that Apple stopped selling audio products from Bose and others and their accessories page for headphones and speakers is currently being upgraded.
Apple is likely to launch these AirPod headphones with several fancy features including magnetically attaching swappable parts, onboard Siri controls, touch controls, and noise cancellation.
Other features of these Apple-branded headphones (rather than Beats-branded headphones) might include their capacity to recognize if they are placed on your head or on your neck, somewhat like how AirPods start or stop music depending on whether they’re located on your ears.
Apple TV and iPad Air
Apple TV hasn’t seen an upgrade in three years and one with a faster processor and better remote might be in the works. But the Bloomberg report also mentions that the new Apple TV may only make an appearance next year.
The new iPad Air which Apple launched last month may get an actual launch date in today’s event.
Macs and MacOS
New Apple Macs might only see the light of day in November, per Bloomberg. Those will be Apple’s first Macs based on ARM processors designed by Apple.
Therefore, Apple is unlikely to announce any major updates to the Apple macOS Big Sur today.

Still, a large collection of Apple’s latest iPhones along with a couple of other products might make today’s Apple launch event one of the largest such events in Apple’s history.
