One of iPhone 12’s bragging features is the access of the device on 5G Wi-Fi connection. All of the model devices are compatible with both mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G– two types of 5G. This connection was said to be faster than 4G that has a download speed of up to 4 gigabits per second, as per Apple CEO Tim Cook.
So, how do other iPhone models connect to this?
How fast is 5G Wi-Fi?
In the recent Apple event named “Hi, Speed,” Apple CEO Tim Cook proudly shares what new iPhone model could do.
First off, device has a 5G connection. All iPhone 12 models have this particular fast-speed internet feature.
Cook claims on the event that 5G Wi-Fi could, in “ideal conditions,” perform twice faster than 4G connection. It has additional download speeds of up to 4 gigabits per second.
If we could also note, one of the features on Apple’s iPhone 12 on the promotional videos show its fast download speed per click on each videos.
Other experts– not connected to Apple– even claim 5G Wi-Fi could make users download a two-hour movie, without any lag, in just 3.6 seconds.
However, it is worth noting, that Apple does not specifically called out this specific speed on download time. It could be slower or even faster than estimated.
How to connect to iPhone 12’s hotspot
Here’s what you want to find out. Since we establish 5G’s connection is faster than other internet connections in the world, how do other iPhone or Apple devices connect to it?
The answer is simple: hotspot.
Just like the standard iPhone model, iPhone 12 also offers the same hotspot feature.
Personal Hotspot tethering, confirmed by iOS and Android expert Aaron Zollo, is available on the new iPhone 12 devices. It is enabled in all iPhone 12 models.
Here are the steps to take on enabling iPhone 12 Personal Hotspot feature:
- Go to iPhone 12’s Settings
- Find the Personal Hotspot menu
- Switch on the “Maximize Compatibility” tab
Steps on connecting iPhone Wi-Fi to iPhone 12’s 5G connection:
- Open Wi-Fi
- Go to Settings
- Choose “iPhone 12” from the settings
- Enter the password if needed
Once clicked, the toggle will show a reminder for the user saying, “Internet performance may be reduced for devices connected to your hotpot when turned on.”
This means, the whole 5G connection is still exclusive on iPhone 12 users. However, other Apple devices could still get a portion of the internet speed.
It is also worth noting that iPhone 12 5G could perform faster, once the other party is closer with the original device.
Keep in mind that the original 5GHz from iPhone 12 will decrease up to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, once connected.
Under ideal connections, the 2.4GHz is not too bad anymore, for a Personal Hotspot connection. It has a speed that supports 450 Mbps or 600 Mbps. In comparison, 5GHz connection supports up to 1300 Mbps.
