Are they really taking the misinformation awareness seriously? Here’s how Instagram takes it.
Instagram’s Recent Tabs are now disabled as the US election is ongoing. This strategy came up to stop the spread of misinformation about the presidential election.
On Thursday Instagram tweeted, “As we near the US elections, we’re making changes to make it harder for people to come across possible misinformation on Instagram. We’re doing this to reduce the real-time spread of potentially harmful content that could pop up around the election.”
The result of this strategy would be the temporary unavailability of the “Recent” tab, which is usually clicked by many Instagram users. It is located just beside the “Top” posts. This course of action is initiated by Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg who is also the owner of the said platform.
For recent months, Facebook has been finding ways to fight misinformation like tightening rules around political ads.
The platform’s algorithms have favored Trump over Biden for this coming US election based on a social media study. Many conservatives have accused all social media platforms of political bias.
Just recently, a study confirms the accusations, but likely different from their claims. According to the Tech Transparency Report (TTP), Instagram pushed negative hashtags towards the Former Vice President, Joe Biden, and blocked from for Trump.
Its related hashtags that direct users to content related to their previous searches triggered TTP to conduct the study. They have compared searches for 20 popular hashtags about the presidential candidates. And they found out that someone disabled all the negative hashtags for searches about Trump,
Biden Instagram searches led to hashtags that insult the Former VP. Other Instagram searches led to more baseless and inflammatory accusations against Biden.
“A technical error caused a number of hashtags to not show related hashtags,” said Instagram spokesperson Raki Wane. “We’ve disabled this feature while we investigate.” Their commentary regarding the results.
However, Instagram’s comment didn’t provide enough comfort to Biden supporters.
