What happened to VR? Will it be able to survive the upcoming wave of next-generation behemoths?
Although the Virtual Reality technology or VR was something that people have coveted for quite a while now, with its release, it seemed like not a lot of people were interested in buying it. In comparison, gamers still opted to buy either the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One in comparison to the actual VR.
What did Sony Playstation CEO have to say about Virtual Reality
According to the CEO of Sony PlayStation Jim Ryan, his thoughts are that Virtual Reality or VR actually won’t be a significant enough part of interactive entertainment come the near future. Ryan then stated to The Washington Post that the whole VR thing still has a really long way to go, the whole story was also reported by The Verge.
He then emphasized that Sony is not going to give up on the current medium. The statement also suggests that there could be a future update to Sony’s very own PlayStation VR headset to come a couple of years away.
His statement in The Washington Post stated that he thinks that humanity is only a couple of minutes away from the future of VR. He also stated that PlayStation does believe in VR. Sony also believes deeply in VR, and that they definitely believe that in some coming point in the future, VR will then represent a particularly meaningful component of the entire interactive entertainment.
Could there be a possibility for Sony PlayStation to push the VR in the future?
He then clarified that it will not be this year or next year but stated that it will eventually come at a certain stage. He also noted that the exciting upcoming PlayStation 5, scheduled to be released on November 12, will be able to support the older PlayStation VR headset with the use of a special adapter.
Pinning the VR’s success to something somewhere in the future as well as ruling out the whole “meaningful” VR market this 2020 or in 2021 is not really a huge positive short-term view of this particular gaming medium. This, of course, is different compared to Sony’s own competitor known as Facebook.
The reason why Sony and Facebook are competitors is because of the recently released Oculus Quest 2 headset. With that said, it would actually be even more surprising if the company, Sony, indicated that they will release a PSVR news during the last few remaining months of this year 2020.
The Plans of Sony as of the moment and other sentiments
For a while, Sony has remained a bit cagey about the whole virtual reality VR plans. Back in 2019, PlayStation’s very own system architect known as Mark Cerny gave a statement to Wired saying VR is actually very important to them. There were no other details that were given from him.
Another Dominic Mallison, the known head of the research and development, also told CNET that a brand new headset would not really arrive alongside the upcoming PlayStation 5. But it also seemed like Mallion was trying to take the whole next-generation PSVR for granted by discussing the different features just like the eye tracing as well as the update controllers. Some time last month, Ryan also called the VR “unproven space” that Sony was actually very intrigued in and also really excited about.
