Funny thing, Japanese people may have the highest incidents of lost AirPods, estimated to 950 pairs in a single railway system alone. To our surprise, all of them are found, stuck inside one of Japan’s biggest railway system, JR East rail.
Have you lost your AirPods?
At around 78 stations in the Tokyo area between July and September, an estimated number of 950 lost AirPods were reported by passengers.
According to East Japan Railway Co., better known as JR East, this was just equal to one-quarter of all dropped items in the said railway system.
However, since the item is too small to get from the platform, most of the staff prefers to not move the dropped AirPods from being stuck in the railings.
As explained on the report, wireless earbuds are common lost items in the train whenever people bump to each other, get inside the train, or while waiting for the next train.
Panasonic vacuum: Here’s the solution to that
In order for their passengers to stop having issues on dropped AirPods, Japanese electronics company Panasonic, created a vacuum device to recover the mini devices from the railings.
As Japan’s JiJi Press pointed out, rail authorities commonly use a mechanical grabber or “magic hand” tool to pick up larger items, found stuck in the railings. These are shoes, slippers, etc.
Even the train staff needs to have extra shift at the end of each train operations, just to pick up the items. Some of them think this part of work is “burdensome” for them.
However, in terms of AirPods, a different device needs to be used.
To solve the problem, Panasonic have partnered with Japan’s JR East to create a vacuum cleaner-style device that is said to be much better suited to picking up stray earbuds.
The device is being tested at Ikebukuro station, a major hub in northern Tokyo, and early results suggest it works much faster than the traditional grabber.
Not only Japan has this problem
Not so surprisingly, Japan is not the only country that has the same AirPods problem.
In fact, a lot of past reports from news agencies record over 7,000 earbuds electronic items, found at subway transportation, over the course of last year alone.
Most of these earbuds were just left stuck inside the railings, until the staff members go down and get it.
