Why You Should Upgrade to The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro – Even Without 5G
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro offer several compelling reasons why you should upgrade from previous iPhones. This is even without considering 5G which is after all dependent on carriers.
The huge advances in the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro can be categorized into design aspects and technical aspects.
iPhone 12 Aesthetics
In terms of design, the 12 series takes inspiration from a previous generation of iPhones – the iPhone 5 or iPhone S to be precise. This throwback in terms of design does not detract from the iPhone 12 – in fact it looks very modern with the ceramic shield on the front and aluminum/steel frame.
In terms of size, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are of the same size which means the same iPhone cover will work for either.
In terms of colors, the iPhone 12 lineup includes some bright colors such as green, blue and (Product) Red.
With an OLED Super Retina XDR display, the iPhone 12 will feel much improved compared to the iPhone 11 with its LCD display.
iPhone 12 Cameras
Apple went to great lengths to tout its camera improvements during the iPhone 12 launch. Apple stressed practical improvements that users will benefit from rather than piling on the megapixels or zoom capabilities that no one really needs.
These claims of practical benefits are indeed accurate rather than just marketing hyperbole.
Dolby Vision in iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models now have Dolby Vision 4K video. The technological triumph here is remarkable. It is to be noted that even movies are not shot in Dolby Vision. They are mastered in Dolby Vision after they are shot. So, for a tiny phone to have such video shooting capabilities is truly amazing.
Apple has made it quite easy to shoot in Dolby Vision – it is just a toggle within the Settings for the camera. When it is enabled, video content is captured in Dolby Vision.
4K Dolby Vision footage quality is a class apart from standard 4K video footage. It does capture a lot of storage space when you shoot in Dolby Vision – 750MB per minute of video.
Night Mode and LiDAR
Night mode picture quality has massively improved with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. When you switch to the portrait mode of the Camera app, if the ambient lighting is too low, the iPhone will suggest the use of night mode via the night mode indicator in the top-left corner.
It doesn’t work when you are using 2X zoom though. So, if you try to use it while zoomed in, the iPhone will let you know to switch to 1X before using night mode.
Apple performs some of the night mode magic via the LiDAR scanner. LiDAR helps with faster and more accurate autofocus including night mode portraits. LiDAR’s practical use cases so far are rather limited to augmented reality apps. Better night mode portraits is one use case outside of AR.
MagSafe Accessories for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
MagSafe protocol usage will enable a wide range of third-party accessories to be used alongside the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. Apple’s integration of magnets and a charging puck into the body of the iPhone open up a world of possibilities for accessory makers.
Apple has already come out with MagSafe-enabled cases, wallets and chargers.
With MagSafe, you get 15W charging in place of the 7.5W charging with Qi charging.
With the puck magnetically attached to the phone’s back for charging, you can still hold your phone. This is a big advantage.
Once Apple’s MagSafe Duo comes out, you will be able to simultaneously charge iPhone and Apple Watch.
It is inevitable that lots of MagSafe accessories will soon appear in the market such as MagSafe-enabled car mounts, docks, multi-chargers, and others.
A14 Bionic Processor
Apple has fitted all four iPhone 12 models with the new A14 Bionic processor. How good is the processor? It delivers about a 20 per cent improvement on the single-core score and 15 per cent on the multi-core over the A13 Bionic processor found in the iPhone 11 range.
That means apps launch faster. The additional processing power with those 11 billion transistors will be useful when processing Dolby Vision 4K videos.
So, this is a processor that is future-ready.
All in all, Apple has delivered quite a punch with its iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. The new range of iPhones comes with better displays, better cameras, new technologies and a better processor.
And we didn’t even mention that they are 5G-ready.
