You’ve probably heard about the newest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. Expectedly, this might be the most expensive Samsung smartphone, to be released in the upcoming year.
There are many thoughts on why this specific phone might be too expensive for anyone. However, a new information from a Korean news site possibly holds the real reason why this smartphone costs higher than other gadgets.
To be honest, this might also be the reason why this phone may flop or not.
What to expect
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a follow-up gadget from its predecessor Galaxy Fold 2, released in September 2020.
So far, the Galaxy Fold 2 is not all bad, based on reviews. In fact, it was even called as an “extravagant success” by The Verge.
Then, what makes it different from the Fold 3?
Samsung has not yet given any specific details on the new Fold 3. Despite that, many rumors have already stirred online. And we’re here to make a rundown on these features.
It’s been a long rumor that Samsung is planning something big for the next pair of their foldable phones. Just like that, a lot of sites also include an S-Pen stylus as part of that major change.
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus, have each of these S-Pen stylus. However, it has been a little while that the brand puts it to their gadgets.
Rumors suggest that, since Fold 3 has bigger screen, it’s more understandable and efficient for the brand to include an S-Pen stylus inside.
Ultra-thin Glass (UTG)
Foldable phones are not really a good idea for most smartphone brands in the world. Mainly, because these devices are more crucial for damage, or can easily break the screen.
To fix that, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is said to have a thicker set of ultra-thin glass (UTG). Compared to Fold 2, the UTG will be twice as thick from 30 cm to 60 cm.
Hinge is a common problem on foldable phones. With Fold 3, a patent suggests that its hinge will have light strip.
The reason why it’s possibly expensive
Though there are still no news on how much will Samsung charge this phone, a lot of reports tell us that this foldable phone could be the brand’s most expensive one.
The main reason of this rumor is the reported ‘under-display camera’ of Samsung. A Korean news site reported that a UDC will be incorporated on the new foldable phone.
Samsung Display is allegedly working on display that is needed for UDC while Samsung Electronics System LSI business division is in charge of development of image sensor for UDC.
“It is heard that Samsung Electronics is designing a display that has wider pixel spacing in the area where UDC will be placed in order to secure opening ratio and so that there will not be an issue with taking pictures.” said one industry official who is familiar with the situation, based on the site.
Of course, this news may or may not be true. After all, once Samsung decides to do it, a lot of things could be compromised: display light/ color, camera quality, etc.
Even so, Samsung has until next year to figure all these things. Maybe we’ll get it in the future.
