In the matter of delivering an amazing experience with a big-screen in package that could still fit in a pocket or purse, rollable phones might be one of the better selections instead of the foldable handsets such as the Galaxy ZFold2 of Samsung. Although, with the new Oppo X 2021 concept, it seems like Oppo has found a way to some mind-bending idea into a reality.
Since there’s another company who thought ahead of OPPO about the concept of a phone with a rollable screen which could also expand the dimensions, the recent demos have the OPPO X 2021 shown in action which results in a handset that even witnessing does not necessarily equal to believing.
During the INNO Day 2020 Event of OPPO, they have presented on how it uses a proprietary Roll Motor for the increase of the size of the concept phone’s display from inches of 6.7 up to inches of 7.4 just by a tap on a button. However, the mind-boggling reason for the transformation would be that the visuals shown on the screen of the phone stretch in accordance to real-time, making it seem more familiar to CGI than that of real life. Based on information, especially that of gizmodo, the OPPO X 2021 does not seem to be faking, meaning that it is actually legit.
By the use of dual motors, OPPO has been able to unroll the rollable display of the concept phone in a manner that seems to be controlled while not putting excessive pressure on some specific points. Not anything like the Galaxy Z Fold2, due to the screen of OPPO X 20201 having a relatively wide arc of 6.8mm when being tucked away, there seems to be no exhibition from the display on any kind of visible bend or crease when deployed fully.
In addition, for better support on the rollable display, an interlocking backplate has been created by OPPO for the improvement of the rigidity and strength of the phone as it gets rolled out.
The OPPO X 2021 has a frame-within-a-frame design in use which allows some important components such as the battery of the phone for staying in place without having to create big gaps for anything dirty to get inside.
For the protection of the rollable screen, OPPO has stated that they have created what has been called a Warp Track. It seems to be durable, laminated, and designed for the increase of its durability which also seems to be serving a function that has similarities to the ultrathin glass that Samsung uses for their foldable phones.
All being said, OPPO has stated that they have applied for patents being a total of 122 which would be based on the components that have been used for the OPPO X 2021, having 12 of the patents being stemmed from the Roll Motor and scrolling mechanism of the company. Unluckily, as Levin Liu as the VP of OPPO stated that he would rather have the OPPO X 2021 released “at the right time,” the rollable phone remains to be a concept-only device as of now.
Nevertheless, despite Samsung having already demonstrated the foldable phones’ power using flexible OLED screens, another company would definitely discover the functions of rollables and make them work in real life.
It would seem that it won’t be long before these concepts can be casually purchased by everyone, since companies such as LG and TCL have been working on their own rollable phones.
It would be nice to experience these rollable phones sooner or later. Other than that, maybe get a new smartphone that has been kept up to date, a brand new smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy A51 or the iPhone 12 Pro.
