Apple’s water-resistance claims are likely false.
A $12 Million fine is about to be paid by one of the Tech Giants, Apple, as Italy’s competition regulator proved its misleading water-resistant iPhones’ feature. The regulator claims that the company has given false claims with the waterproof feature on their recent iPhone line.
The $12 Million fine exposed
The jurisdiction of the said amount was announced on Monday by the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) stating that Apple misled consumers on two accounts. The first account is the promotional materials that the company uses for the latest iPhone models.
The specific feature of this one is the waterproof claims, which are likely attached to iPhone 8 to iPhone 11. According to the reports, the company can resist water at a depth of between 1 and 4 meters for likely 30 minutes.
The AGCM debunked that one as this case of the specification is under controlled laboratory conditions, with still and pure water. This scenario is unlikely untrue, for consumers might drop their phones in different water.
The second misleading scenario is their warranty terms, wherein some cases are voided once the iPhones are damaged by liquids.
The company won’t do a repair on the iPhone that had been damaged by any type of liquid, whether is pure water or not.
As of the moment, Apple declined to comment on the specific fine.
Apple’s iPhone 11 sales have skyrocketed for the first quarter of 2020. It reportedly had about 37.7 million sold units this year. It is said that what drove this to success is its pricing strategy, making it $50 cheaper than the iPhone XR.
It is also important to note that the iPhone 11 has more firm hardware components than its predecessors.
There are several iPhones that have made it to the list. One of which is the iPhone SE 2020which is in 5th place and has sold 8.7 million units abroad. This then followed by the iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Based on the data shown, the shipments of iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max declined compared to the iPhone XS last 2019. However, their rankings improved, and both models achieved positive results.
Despite having a decrease in sales, it was still selling above expectations during the pandemic.
