According to Gartner reports Apple has been overtaken by Xiaomi in the 3rd place in terms of global smartphone sales during the third quarter of 2020.

Xiaomi, a Chinese tech company sold nearly 5 Million units more than Apple. Reasons like Apple’s delayed release of the iPhone 12 and Huawei’s decline in sales during the third quarter gave way to their success.
The tech company also continued its strong presence in China and aggressive selling smartphone outside of China with almost half of its sales coming from overseas, taking account a remarkable growth in India. The production capacity in India improved to about 85% of its pre-pandemic level giving them an advantage to cater to the growing demands.
Xiaomi’s Redmi 9 Series, their low-end selection, were well accepted both in China and India. Their mid-range Redmi K30 Ultra and high-end MI 10 Ultra were also launched that caught more attention to consumers. Overall the smartphone company posted a 30% increase in its market share from second to third-quarter and around 63% increase year-on-year making it to the third place in terms of market shares.
Global Smartphone sales in the third quarter were down by 4% year-on-year but it significantly improved by 32% compare to the second quarter, after two consecutive quarters of decline, as economies try to recover from the effect of the pandemic.
Among the top competitors, Samsung regain its first place from Huawei whose sales jumped up by 48% from the previous quarter. Huawei, on the other hand, went back to the second place after a decline of 7% in the third quarter due to the US-China trade wars. For the first time, Xiaomi seized the third place from Apple after posting a sales increase of 46% from the same period last year. Apple slipped down to the fourth place when the release of iPhone 12 was delayed.
Vivo and Oppo came in the fifth and sixth respectively with almost the same sales during the third quarter. The new player Realme who is the sister brand of Oppo came in the seventh place doubling its market share from the second quarter when it posted a 132% increase of sales.
With the advance stage of vaccines and hopefully the continued recovery of economies, the fourth-quarter smartphone sales numbers might give us a better overall picture. But it might be a different story for Xiaomi when Apple introduces not one, nor two, but four new iPhones with varying price range.
Will they be able to defend its third place from Apple? Or even move up to the second place taking over Huawei whose market share is just over 1%? Well, lets wait and see…
