After over thirty years, the sequel Karate Kid return with a new brand Cobra Kai. Although Cobra Kai is a standalone series where viewers without watching the previous sequel can still understand and enjoy since there are several flashbacks of some important incidents from the past.
Cobra Kai picks up the rivalry between Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso that started in the Karate Kid. More than thirty years have passed and yet the rivalry remained unresolved.
Over thirty years after the Karate Kid
After Johnny was defeated by Daniel in the 1984’s All Valley Karate Championship Tournament, he turned away living behind the world of karate. Until his path crossed with Miguel Diaz who pleaded him to teach karate for self-defense from the bullying experienced in the school. Hesitant at first, Johnny ended up reviving the Cobra Kai dojo with Miguel as first student.
When Miguel showed his newly acquired karate skill against his tormentors, many students, mostly victims of bullies, lined up to sign in to the reopened Cobra Kai dojo. Johnny taught his students the three-pronged philosophies of the Cobra Kai: “Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.”
Daniel LaRusso was doing well with his car dealership. When he learned about the rebirth of the Cobra Kai dojo, he opposed to the idea leading him to bring back his long-ignored passion on karate. Alongside the memories of his deceased Sensei Miyagi, he restored the Miyagi-Do dojo with Robby (the estranged son of his rival Johnny) as first protégé.
Roby, who initially worked in LaRusso’s Auto Shop with the intention to annoy his Dad, showed his potential and found his way to be under Daniel’s wing. He was later on joined by Sam, Daniel’s daughter, and furthermore by students who transferred from Cobra Kai due to unpleasant experiences.
Following the footstep of his mentor Miyagi, Daniel taught his students by letting them do chores like waxing cars and painting fences which are important defensive movements during the fight.
The new characters mixed with some original casts from Karate Kid make the series interesting. With improved cinematography and choreography, the training and fighting scenes were enjoyable and engaging.
