Since the biggest search engine in the world crashed, millions of users were unable to reach their Google accounts, including Gmail and YouTube. This comes just days after a major breach by Russian hackers against US government agencies. The outage went on for over an hour.
Not working with Google has ignited discord for individuals and companies.
More than 30,000 individuals reported issues when Google went down.
In the UK, US and India, as well as in other countries, nearly 70,000 YouTube and Gmail outages have also been reported.
“We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a majority of users,” Google said.
Other services were replaced by Gmail, the world’s most popular email platform with more than 1.5 billion users.
Initially, Google’s service dashboard showed no errors but was quickly altered.
The outage appeared to be related to the authentication tools of the company, which handle how users log in to services run by developers from Google and third parties.
This implies that resources that do not work through logging in are fully inaccessible.
Third-party applications utilizing the Google Authentication Program have continued to be open to users who are still logging in but have struggled to reach them as users have sought to sign in or out of the service.
Netizens reacted over the issue
During the outage, people took to social media with one person tweeting: “Google and every single one of their products is down: YouTube, Gmail, Drive, Docs, etc!”
Another said: “Yoooo @Google what’s going on yo!? @YouTube even @Gmail is down. #YouTubeDOWN.”
One Twitter netizen claimed “2020 is really disgusting” because Google and YouTube experienced an outage.
After the crash, somebody else said they were “freaking out.” Another person said today is the “worst day ever.”
Had Google been hacked?
Although the two have not been linked, this outage across Google’s services also came hours after a successful hack in the US.
Hackers supported by an unidentified state actor hacked the data from the US Treasury and National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
On Sunday, the US Commerce Department confirmed it was the victim of a data breach.
The National Security Council said the United States government knows these issues. The agency said it is taking all required steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation.
One source said this is a story much bigger than a single agency.
“This is a huge cyber espionage campaign targeting the US government and its interests.”
A Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency spokesperson said they had been working closely with its on recently discovered activities on government networks.
CISA provides the affected entities with technical assistance as they work to identify and mitigate any potential compromises.
