Apple and Facebook, two of the biggest tech companies in the world, are now under serious debate against each other.
This was after the social media company accused Apple of “stopping the internet from being free,” connected to the issue of user privacy.
The Cupertino-based tech giant, however, released a statement via The Verge saying, they were only “standing up for users.”
Why Facebook and Apple in dispute
Apple and Facebook are two of the popular and used tech companies in the world. Surprisingly, they do not share the same belief.
In Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference, the company released a controversial privacy update called App Tracking Transparency.
This feature allows iOS users to know which app will be getting their data, resulting in a requirement for developers to seek approval before opting into devices.
Facebook strikes against Apple
It was not welcomed by most developers and ad businesses. Just like Facebook.
In a full-page ad on a newspaper, the social media giant posted an article titled, “We’re standing up to Apple for small businesses everywhere.”
In line with this article is the explanation of why the new Apple privacy update should not be supported.
Facebook claims that small businesses are the ones that will be hugely affected by these changes. The company writes, “We hear your concerns, and we stand with you.”
Unfortunately, it did not go well. In fact, Facebook was even more bashed by Apple and end-users for wanting to remove the privacy feature.
As explained by The Verge in a different report, the reason why the social media realized this is that Facebook won’t be allowed to automatically opt-in users on their ad businesses anymore.
It was not yet sure, however, BuzzFeed News editor John Paczkowski claims that Facebook is planning to make an anti-Apple ad, once they did not hear their pleas.
The new ad will say to show Apple as the company that breaks the freedom of the internet. With Paczkowski quoting Facebook, the privacy update will “change the internet as we know it for the worse.”
“Users should have the choice to opt-in or not”
In answer to Facebook’s claims, Apple has finally spoken up and told the media that they were only standing up for users with the new privacy update.
Here’s the statement:
We believe that this is a simple matter of standing up for our users. Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not. App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14 does not require Facebook to change its approach to tracking users and creating targeted advertising, it simply requires they give users a choice.
When will the update arrive?
Luckily for Facebook, Apple has already delayed the release of the privacy update. Starting early next year, apps may have to ask for users’ permission in every data they’ll be collecting from the users.
Still, some things could happen in the next months to come. We’ll never know for sure.
