Google wasn’t able to meet its deadline for the detailed report of its user data collecting and tracking habits. Since this is the case, Apple seems to be making an exemption with the tech giant company.
The iPhone manufacturer previously updated its App Store‘s policy. Apple’s update was released on December 8, 2020. The company decided to do this so that all the new apps will be required to outline how they collect the user’s sensitive info.
This means that all iPhone and iPad users should know how the needed information on how the applications they install work. However, Apple seems to be allowing Google to avoid releasing such information.
As of the moment, Google’s user data collection habits are still unclear since they did not release any information about the company’s methods. This means that popular smartphone apps, such as Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and Chrome, are still not offering a detailed breakdown of the data that their publisher can track from the people’s iPads and iPhones.
To give you an idea about Apple’s new policy, here’s the official App Store’s message;
(No Details Provided. The developer will be required to provide privacy details when they submit their next app update)
Although this is the case, there are some Google apps that were able to provide a detailed report on how they store and track user data. But, these apps are not usually used by people.
Google Motions and Play Movies are among the apps that were able to comply. However, these apps don’t make any difference since they are not used for daily online tasks and they are unpopular.
Google apps that did not comply
This is currently a big deal since popular apps are not providing the required details that explain how they track and collect user’s sensitive info.
These apps are Google Home, News, YouTube Music, Assistant, Calendar, Earth, Photos, Waze, Chrome, and Pay. This means that majority of the people still don’t know if their most important data is being collected or stored by the tech giant company.
On the other hand, the app developer defended itself, saying that the company will start updating their apps this week or next week. It added that all its applications will soon detail how they collect and store user’s sensitive info.
Protecting your sensitive data
Security experts explained that there are numerous ways you can do to keep your sensitive data safe. The most important thing to remember is never downloading an app without reading its policy.
Before you go to App Store or Google Play Store, always check if the app discloses its activity. This way, you will be able to identify the sensitive data that the application will track and store once you install it in the future.
Another great method is always encrypting your sensitive info. However, this method requires you to use encryption software that can scramble the information you send over the internet. Of course, you still need its description and how it works.
