With the new WhatsApp policy coming up, a lot of people are looking for alternative messaging apps to substitute the controversial apps.
When it came to the new WhatsApp policy, one thing was highlighted and started catching fire, the fact that their messages were no longer safe as the messaging app would pass the data to Facebook. However, this is not the only controversy when it comes to messaging apps since Facebook Messenger does the same.
With this in mind, a lot of people are now starting to look for alternative messaging apps in order to protect their data from being used without them knowing. Another application is becoming really popular ever since the richest man on earth, Elon Musk, promoted it, Signal.
Alternative Messaging apps
Signal is known for its end-to-end encryption and does not make money off of people’s data but rather through donations. Due to this, everything sent is automatically scrambled and only the recipient will be able to receive the message whether it be in text form, pictures, or videos. Signal’s popularity was also highlighted due to Edward Snowden, the high-profile privacy enthusiast also promoted Signal out of all the other messaging apps.
Although Telegram isn’t automatically encrypted, the private message option makes the messages sent through that option encrypted. While being just one of the many messaging apps out there, Telegram isn’t really associated with Facebook which currently seems to be a relief for those concerned about their privacy. Telegram has also seen a massive growth in users ever since WhatsApp’s announcement.
Viber is already moderately popular and the good news is that the Viber 6.0 sports end-to-end encryption covering calls, group messages, one-on-one messaging, media sharing, and other secondary devices. This means that there are no encryption keys stored by the company and only the clients themselves will be able to access their messages. The good thing about Viber, just like Telegram, is that it is very similar to WhatsApp which means those coming from WhatsApp who decide to switch to Viber or Telegram won’t have a hard time adjusting.
Relatively, if users are careful and don’t open spam mail or phishing messages, their email would still be the best secure messaging platform. Google Hangouts can be used for messaging and also for video calls which is a trend that has also been growing ever since the pandemic started. While people can’t always zoom in on each other on the go, Google Hangouts could be a good alternative to those that prefer video calls.
When it comes to security, it’s important that messaging apps are encrypted so that they can protect the users device. When it comes to protecting your PC or cell phone, having an antivirus is the best way to go. Both McAfee and Norton are two of the best antiviruses available today. Messaging apps can be a tough choice to pick. However, the few mentioned above would be the best options for users to protect their privacy.
