iMessage is currently suffering from a major security flaw. Security researchers and other experts claimed that the main reason behind the issue is one of Apple‘s services.
iMessage is considered one of the safest messaging applications since it uses an end-to-end encryption feature or E2E encryption method. This feature keeps the sender and receiver’s message safe since it doesn’t allow Apple’s developers and other employees to use the conversations of users.
As of the moment, apps such as iMessage provides end-to-end encryption security since many companies are trying to track users’ sensitive data and info so that they can generate proper ads according to people’s online activities.
Previously, the Facebook app was accused of installing a new user tracking update that would allow the company to track its users even when they are logged out. Scary right? That’s why many people are currently looking for alternatives that would allow them to communicate with their friends, family, and loved ones safe.
iMessage is considered as one of the safest apps, however, security experts said that this messaging application can be vulnerable because of iCloud.
iCloud is usually used to back up people’s files and other sensitive info so that when their accounts or devices were compromised, they can still recover their data.
However, iCloud is allegedly making iMessage vulnerable to data tracking and other malicious acts. Although it is also using an end-to-end encryption feature, the service still allows Apple to receive a copy of the key that is used to encrypt people’s backup files.
This means that Apple and its employees could technically access the contents of your iMessage backups on Apple’s servers, which are not end-to-end encrypted. If the tech giant manufacturer’s servers were compromised or someone else gained access to your iCloud account, they could see the contents of your messages.
The situation could also allow Apple to turn over the contents of your app history if compelled by the government. The iPhone giant manufacturer confirmed that although it is not storing the contents of FaceTime audio and video calls, it is still saving the attachments in your messaging application.
Although this is the case, the Apple messaging app is still better than regular SMS services. Why? Because SMS is usually not private or secure when sending the user’s message. SMS services are also vulnerable when they are receiving messages.
What you should need
The solution to this issue is very simple. Users need to disable their iCloud services on the app. All you need to do is to open your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud. Disable the “Messages” option here to stop storing your iMessage history in iCloud.
However, if the people you are talking to are still using their iCloud to backup their apps, your messages will still be stored on their accounts. This means that both receiver and sender need to turn off their iCloud service to make sure that their convos are safe.
If you don’t want this to happen, researchers and experts suggested that you and the receiver use secure alternative messaging apps that don’t back up iCloud in any way.
There are lots of applications that are currently available. Signal is currently the most popular application after WhatsApp changed its policy. The company’s income grew since people are now looking for mediums that have E2E encryption features.
