The ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic is not getting any better, especially since there are new types of coronavirus that are currently spreading across different countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, China, South Africa, and more. It seems like anywhere you go has high risks of transmission.
Some people are now buying their own car, even if it is used-vehicle, just to avoid riding public transportations such as busses, trains, and other modes of transportations where there are crowded people. However, medical experts said that even cars have high COVID-19 airborne transmission risks.
If you are currently worried, here are some of the suggested measures you need to conduct to lessen the risk of catching the deadly novel coronavirus.
Reducing COVID-19 transmission inside cars
Previously, researchers and other medical experts confirmed that COVID-19 is an airborne virus. This means that the disease can spread through the air.
This is also the main reason why WHO or World Health Organization is highly suggesting that people should always wear masks and face shields when going out to the public. However, if you are inside a car, these safety measures might not help you at all.
Experts explained that the first thing you need to check is your vehicle’s ventilation system. COVID-19 quickly spreads in places that have a poor ventilation system. Why? Because the air carrying the virus particles will only stay in that place or area, making people breathe the viral particles over and over again.
Checking your car’s ventilation system is pretty easy. One is by turning on the heating system, which takes in fresh air from outside, and opening windows through which it can be flushed out. Another way is to just have the windows open.
On the other hand, if you are riding a taxi, always make sure that the car has barriers and screens to separate you from the driver. These help in reducing transmission through larger droplets. These are the kinds of droplets that are released through coughing, sneezing, or talking loudly. Decontaminating surfaces helps against the fomite transmission, essentially from surfaces.
However, barriers and screens are not enough to reduce airborne diseases since they can easily pass through the gaps and other holes. Experts also suggested that people should open their car’s windows. This seems to be a confusing recommendation since you will be exposed.
But, you need to remember that your car won’t stay put in one place for too long. You need to open two, or all your windows if possible so that the air circulation would be efficient.
As of the moment, every safety measure is essential to protect yourself from the virus, as well as protecting your friends, partner, and family members. All people across the globe should work together or this pandemic will continue for more years to come.
