Facebook is now trying to weigh in the legal implications of actually building a new facial recognition technology that would be built into a pair of smart glasses that the company is currently developing and is also expected to launch some time later this year.
According to BuzzFeedNews, the AR and VR chief at Facebook, Andrew Bosworth, told Facebook employees during a recent internal meeting that took place on Thursday that the company is weighing in a legal framework currently in order to integrate the said facial recognition system into the company’s smart glasses.

The report then noted that Bosworth was pretty quick to be able to emphasize that there had still been nothing decided as of the moment. It was also noted that it could prove that the current state laws might just make it impossible for Facebook to be able to offer people the ability for them to search for other people using the real-world profile on their own faces.
After the story publication online, Bosworth then elaborated more on Twitter underlying the main fact that Facebook had been pretty open regarding its efforts in being able to develop the said AR glasses. He also noted that the AR smart glasses are currently still in the product’s early stages.
Facebook partners with Ray-Ban
Facebook initially spoke about the said smart glasses out in public for the very first time last year. This was when it was claimed that the upcoming AR glasses would be expected to arrive sooner rather than later within 2021. The smart glasses are currently being developed along with Ray-Ban. The AR glasses are also expected to go head to head with other much similar rival products coming from both Amazon and Snapchat and not to mention Lenovo with the AR Glasses that have already launched, ThinkReality A3.
The new smart glasses, however, isn’t really focusing on the whole facial recognition system. The AR glasses are actually focused on something more than just being able to identify a person based on their facial features when the smart glasses are able to pick them up. In fact, the new smart glasses are Facebook’s way of expanding their product line and competing with another physical product aside from the Oculus.
For those interested to get a closer look as to what to expect with the upcoming Facebook Smart Glasses, it might be a good time to buy the Oculus Quest 2 or even the Oculus Rift 5. While the specifics regarding the Facebook Smart Glasses release date are still unknown, the company has still announced that they might launch out within this 2021.
