The ultra-portable speaker market is a bit competitive. The Sonos Roam will have to contend against products like Bose SoundLink and Ultimate Ears Boom within the price range category.
Sonos says that the company finally made the best-sounding ultra-portable good quality speaker with its Roam. With its dimension of 6.61×2.44×2.36-inches (168x62x60 mm) and weighs around 0.95 lb (0.43 kg).
It comes with total protection against dust, sand, and water with its IP67 rating. Able to handle about 30 minutes of being submerged about 1 meter below water level.
The design looks durable with considerable features like a concave top so that buttons are not easily pressed by accident.
While the 10-hour battery life may not as long compare to its competitors. It should be sufficient enough for whole day use on most occasions. When not in use, Roam will automatically switch to sleep mode. This can extend battery life to more than 10 hours.
Roam features perhaps one of the most versatile charging options among its category. It is capable of either cable or wireless charging. Using USB-C to power up or charging with Qi wireless that is compatible with any existing chargers. Sonos Roam can also be powered using a dedicated magnetic wireless charging base as a third charging option. One has to pay extra for the charging base though.
Apple users will be happy to know that Roam supports AirPlay 2, perhaps the smallest speaker that offers the functionality.
Aside from AirPlay 2, Roam also supports Alexa and Google Assistant. Including the new feature called “Sound Swap” that allows moving the sound to or from the nearest speaker. Just press and hold Roam’s play/pause button.
Roam is capable of connecting to WiFi networks when available within a given range. However, when going beyond the available range it will automatically switch to the mobile phone for a smooth experience.
