Contact lenses with gold nanoparticles can fix people’s color blindness. This color vision deficiency is one of the most annoying things, especially if you are a professional photographer, videographer, or film editor.
And now, various researchers and scientists claimed that these new contact lenses could be the solution to color blindness. It is also expected to be more comfortable, effective, and safer for wearers compared to the usual lenses that are being sold by various companies and businesses.
As of the moment, there are different kinds of color vision deficiency. The most common one is when people have difficulty differentiating red from green. People with color blindness, which mostly affects men, are able to live perfectly normal lives day-to-day. However, not being able to differentiate certain colors can make some tasks difficult and can exclude people from certain jobs. These include driving since drivers need to know if the stoplight has turned green, yellow, or red.
But now, the new contact lenses with gold nanoparticles could prevent the mentioned issues. Here are other things you need to know about this innovation.
How contact lenses with gold nanoparticles work
James Clerk Maxwell, a popular inventor, and scientist is the first one that developed contact lenses that help people with color blindness. His invention became very popular way back in 1854. However, this idea is not new since several lenses were already developed in the past. These include Chromagen lenses, which are not as effective as normal glasses.
Stephen Dain, an emeritus professor specializing in optometry, said that “for the color vision deficient, the spectacle lenses are the most helpful, being darker tints, but the contact lenses are relatively undetectable.”
He added that adding gold chloride to molten glass has long been known to create cranberry spectacles, which gives the glass a red tint. Ahmed Salih and colleagues from Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi drew inspiration from this ancient technique and added gold nanoparticles to soft spectacles to give them a red tint that can help people with red-green color blindness to better discriminate colors in this spectrum.
On the other hand, the key benefit of the new spectacles is that they are very similar to modern soft contact lenses, with good water content, making them less likely to dry out. When the team compared the transmission of light through their lenses with that of other color correcting glasses and lenses, they found their lenses were just as good.
Meanwhile, the new spectacles also look more attractive compared to other lenses, thanks to the biocompatibility of the gold nanoparticles. Dain also explained that the only color vision advantage would be if the tint could be made darker than the current ones.
The new spectacles are also expected to solve the issue of the current Chromagen lenses, which is getting enough dye into the soft contact glasses to make it dark enough to be really efficient.
