Earth’s doomsday has been a huge debate in the history. A lot of rumors have connected the world’s ending to major myths—on whether it will really happen or not.
Apparently, in the scientific world, experts also believe that doomsday could actually happen in the future.
To save the loss of humanity in Earth, a new proposal comes to mind: build a DNA sperm bank in Moon.
Moon’s doomsday vault?
Jekan Thanga, a professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona, during the IEEE Aerospace Conference, proposed a new way to preserve the humanity, once the apocalypse may start to happen.
Through his ‘global insurance policy,’ he proposed to send 6.7 million frozen Earth species to the Moon, and lock them in what reports called as a ‘doomsday vault.’
The million supplies would include mainly of plant seeds from the Earth. These items are said to be needed, in order to save the humanity from starving to death.
However, what’s more interesting on their proposal, is that humans, of course, are also needed to be preserved.
In order to do that, the doomsday vault will also have to carry sperm and egg samples from humans and animals. All of the said items would be shipped to the Moon from Earth and be stored in the frozen vault.
“As humans, we had a close call about 75,000 years ago with the Toba supervolcanic eruption, which caused a 1,000-year cooling period and, according to some, aligns with an estimated drop in human diversity,” he said.
“Because human civilisation has such a large footprint, if it were to collapse, that could have a negative cascading effect on the rest of the planet.”
How does this works?
AS explained on reports, the said lunar vault or lunar ark will be created in one of the moon’s many lava tubes.
These locations are expected to have the possible chances for human settlement. Indeed, they could also be the perfect area to place the millions supplies from Earth.
All the preserved items would be placed there with a temperature of -180°C to -196°C. An airlock will also be installed in the said vault, to make sure that humans can only open the said ark.
Since there are still no accurate and enough research that humans can live in Moon, researchers proposed that government can develop robots to guard the supplies or attend to emergency needs on the area.
They will be controlled using ‘quantum levitation,’ in order for the robotics to move without being much affected with the extreme cold inside the vault.
“It’s like they’re locked in place by strings, but invisible strings. When you get to cryogenic temperatures, strange things happen. Some of it just looks like magic but is based on tried and laboratory-tested physics principles at the edge of our understanding,” Thanga said.
Is this possible?
So far, since this was only a proposal, there are still no other researchers that support to this idea.
After all, Thanga also expect this project to have a 30-year timeline before the complete vault project is ready to be used by humanity.
Possible or not, doomsday is a thing to be worried about.
