Suspecting spyware in your PC and not knowing what to do? Here are steps to follow in removing spyware.
Spyware is a kind of malware that clings to the PC to record all online activities without you knowing it. And then, the maker will sell the obtained information to advertisers, or access sensitive details like bank accounts, or steal your identity. Removing Spyware is an important activity to maintain safety and security.
Steps in Removing Spyware from Windows as recommended by Shaant Minha of MUO:
1. Turn on safe mode
Before exploring other ways to remove the spyware from Windows computers, bring the PC to safe mode.
Safe mode is a Microsoft Windows feature that will enable you to start the computer with the most basic settings, using limited files and drivers. This can help you fix many problems in the operating system.
To run in safe mode:
- Click Windows key > Power.
- Click Restart as you hold down the shift key.
- Choose Troubleshoot and then Advance option
- Click the Start-up Settings
- Click the Restart at the bottom right of the Start-up Settings.
- Choose the appropriate one from the various boot options being displayed.
- Then, Windows 10 will restart in Safe mode.
2. Use Windows Defender Offline Scan
Windows Defender is a free program from Microsoft that was introduced first with Windows XP. It can scan and remove any potential threats found on the computer.
Below are the steps to scan with Windows Defender:
- Search windows security in the search bar.
- Select Virus & threat protection
- Under the Current Threats option, click on Scan options.
- Choose the Windows Defender Offline Scan, and click Scan Now.
To see the scan results, go to windows security and choose Virus & threat protection. Click on Protection history to see the removed threats.
3. Delete Suspicious Files
Deleting any suspicious files could be another way to remove spyware from Windows 10. Type in the control panel in the search bar. Select Programs and Features. Right-click on the suspected app, and click the uninstall button. Restart the PC after uninstalling to effect the changes made.
4. Use a Professional Spyware Removal Application
A trusted spyware removal software is recommended. With minimal cost, try the two below:
a. Norton 360 Deluxe – promises to protect PC, Mac, and Mobile Devices against the virus, malware, spyware, and ransomware, with additional features like VPN.
b. McAfee Total Protection – has been designed to protect from and eliminate spyware, adware, viruses, malware, and ransomware.
5. Reset Windows 10
If nothing much happened still, then, the last resort can be done – resetting windows to their factory settings. It will give you a clean and fresh system.
To do this, go to Settings. Select Update & Security, and choose Recovery. Then, click on the Get Started. You will be prompted to choose between the two options: keep my files or remove everything. To ensure that no spyware or any threat will remain, choose to remove everything. It will give you a freshly renewed system.
