Following the rumors of Microsoft buying Discord for approximately $10 billion, Discord releases a new feature similar to Clubhouse in its latest update.
With over 140 million active users on the monthly basis, Discord is well-liked for its unique and convenient features; hence, it is widely used as a communication platform for playing online games with friends. Just recently, it aired a new update that allows people to hold live audio events.
Launched in 2015 and popularized by video gamers and streamers, Discord is a communication software that allows users to text chat, voice chat, and video chat with other users. It also allows users to share their screen with others and stream the app or game they are currently on.
Microsoft and Discord
According to some gossip, Discord is being acquired by Microsoft for roughly $10 billion. Moreover, when inquired, both company representatives declined to release a comment.
Indeed, these rumors greatly startled the gaming community. This is due to fears that Discord may start having complicated logins similar to the other communication apps that were bought by Microsoft.
New Discord Update
Despite the rumors, Discord Inc. remains with its original founders as of the moment. Moreover, it just launched a new feature similar to Clubhouse on Wednesday.
The new feature is called “Stage Channels,” which allows users to supervise voice events even with 1,000 members. This feature will definitely help build engagement among the many communities in Discord.
This feature is different from the usual Discord mechanics as the Stage Channels allow only a few people to stay in the spotlight or focus and talk at once while an audience listens in. However, engagement is not compromised as audiences can raise their hand for a chance to talk. To achieve more organization, the feature also allows a Stage Moderator who can mute, remove, or add a speaker.
Discord producers stated that it developed Stage Channels after the increase of users utilizing the app for various events due to the pandemic. Moreover, the producers plan to increase the capacity for each Stage and to add a way for users to earn from the Stage events; however, these plans will not be in action anytime soon.
Clubhouse is an audio chat app launched last April 2020. Recently, it has garnered 10 million active users on a weekly basis. Despite its invitation-only restriction, it has shown great potential as an audio chat service provider, especially during the pandemic where people have to stay home at all times.
Other Existing and Upcoming Audio Chat Apps
Developers are planning to air a new live audio feature called “Spaces” by April for people around the globe to use.
Owned by Microsoft, LinkedIn is also reportedly undergoing trials for audio features.
Good news for users, more features have been added to the voice chats in this app. Moreover, size limits have been removed.
- Spotify Inc.
Just recently, Spotify Inc acquired Locker Room, a sports-talk app for live audio conversations.
