With the conclusion of the series last May 2019, Game of Thrones is back with a prequel in a broadway play. Expect to see Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister as teenagers!
Despite the great buzz and popularity of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones while it aired, it continues to dominate the television scene even after its series finale. Moreover, he’s expanding his masterpiece outside of television by developing a stage show for Game of Thrones with the aim of a Broadway debut come 2023.
Stage Play Prequel Storyline
Also planned for Australia and London, the play will revolve around producing a prequel. The characters involved include Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark, who have died in the main timeline, as teenagers in the stage show. Although various Game of Thrones prequel stories are being made for TV, this stage play is quite significant, as it would be the first one to include original characters to play for the new project.
Besides the exciting news of Stark’s and Lannister’s presence in the prequel, the play is said to surround a significant historical event from the past of Westeros, specifically “The Great Tourney at Harrenhal.” This event is quite recognized, however, continues to be cloaked in mystery. THR also adds that “the story would be centered in love, madness, vengeance, and the dangers of dealing in prophecy.” Also, secrets and lies only hinted at until recently are expected to be revealed.
Besides Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister, the following characters might also appear:
- Legendary knight Arthur Dayne
- Prince Rhaegar Targaryen
- Robert Baratheon
- Lyanna Stark
Moreover, these characters will be portrayed as younger versions of the main storyline. Lyanna Stark is also expected to be featured prominently owing to her relationship, the same relationship that triggered the rebellion of Robert against the Mad King, with the prince being publicly established at the tournament.
Martin Signs a Deal with HBO
Other than Game of Thrones going broadway, there is another good news for George R.R. Martin fans: he signed a five-year deal with HBO. The deal involves eight figures and creating more programming for both HBO and HBO Max.
Martin already has some new projects for his “A Song of Ice and Fire” universe in production at HBO. Moreover, he is an executive producer of two adaptations of fantasy works from other creators in the network.
Besides the busy schedule, he also has a feature film with Paul W.S. Anderson directing, a series developing at Peacock, and, surprisingly, a theme park ride with his experiential immersive entertainment company.
Movies and series are a blessing that creators and producers have bestowed upon billions of people. Similarly, Game of Thrones is one of the most popular fantasy shows that greatly shook the television scene.
