Researchers from Russia have developed a new battery technology that can potentially charge much faster than lithium-ion. Scientists proudly announced that it can potentially charge 10 times faster than lithium-ion. This will be a breakthrough once it will start rolling out. Oleg Levin, an electrochemistry researcher from St. Petersburg University said that the new battery technology will use polymer material. And it can charge the battery much faster by 10 times than the traditional battery. A series of demonstrations have successfully shown its speed in charging.
The key to the new battery technology
The key to this new battery technology lies in the kind of material being used. Scientists have found out that a nitroxyl-based redox polymer can go through a process to boost electron conductivity.
The battery also does well in low temperatures, which is a great advantage to the common issues of lithium-ion batteries. However, scientists warn that this is not a perfected technology as of yet.
At this early stage, in terms of capacity the new battery is still way behind by around 30 to 40% compared to the lithium-ion batteries, Levin explained. Currently, a team of scientists is working hard to further improve this technology.
In theory, nitroxyl-based polymers could eventually offer good capacitive potential. So, it is just a matter of time before the team will find out how to hit the right combination. Its aim is for the battery to deliver charging headroom on top of the striking conductivity.
Many are excited over this new battery technology that offers not just a speedy charging advantage. it also will bring along some more advantages.
Levin says that this new battery is safe to use. It does not pose any potential combustion hazard, not like the cobalt-based including lithium-ion batteries that are widely used today. Another good thing about this new battery is that it uses much less metal. Making it more environmentally friendly compared to the lithium-ion batteries who use more metals.
