Youtube is now taking over the account of one of the famous Nigerian pastors in the platform. But, why did it happen? Here’s why TB Joshua gets controversial.
On Friday, April 16, BBC reported that Youtube has recently suspended the account of the pastor influencer named TB Joshua. As explained on the report, the video-streaming site found the pastor’s videos as violations for ‘hate speech.’ Here’s what happened, and why most LGBTQ+ people do not like this Nigerian pastor.
Who is TB Joshua?
TB Joshua, one of Nigeria’s most influential pastor evangelist in the country, had his Youtube account suspended over alleged claims of hate speech. In the BBC report, it was explained that at least seven videos from TB Joshua’s account had reportedly violated Youtube’s guidelines. Several of his videos were showing him conducting ‘prayers’ to heal a person from being gay or homosexual.
About 2 million subscribers, few of them are well-known politicians, were following TB Joshua’s account before it was officially suspended by the platform. As noted by UK-based agency openDemocracy, the pastor’s videos show his hatred, and his followers’ hatred, towards members of LGBTQ+.
Is it really violating Youtube guidelines?
Though, a lot of people thinks that TB Joshua’s account should be suspended or terminated, his followers– on the other hand– think otherwise. They believed that the pastor was being removed in the platform, in order to prevent people from receiving his revelations explaining that being gay is a ‘disease’ that can be cured with extreme measures. Youtube answered the allegations promptly.
“YouTube’s Community Guidelines prohibit hate speech and we remove flagged videos and comments that violate these policies. In this case we have terminated the channel,” a YouTube spokesperson told openDemocracy. “Youtube prohibits content which alleges that someone is mentally ill, diseased, or inferior because of their membership in a protected group including sexual orientation,”
Conversion therapy has been one of the controversial processes of ‘converting’ someone’s sexual orientation. The term “conversion therapy” refers to any form of treatment or psychotherapy which aims to change a person’s sexual orientation or to suppress a person’s gender identity.
Though this process can be traumatic to members of LGBTQ+, this practice is still legal to some places in the world. The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson even promised that he will soon ban this practice, in order to help gay people from possible trauma, torture, and such. However, as of now, there are still no updates on this promised reform.
Gay conversion therapy ban
Conservative groups and religious people said that banning such practice could result to a major confusion in the court of law. What they worries the most is that pastors could be arrested and be penalized once this happened.
“If the government do finally ban conversion therapy, they need to be clear on what it means, because it could do more harm than good. Especially for trans healthcare,” said one therapist on BBC.
Will this result to a better world for gay people or would it worsen their peace in the community?
