iPhone AirDrop currently has a flaw that could leak your email, phone number, and other sensitive information. Is Apple working on it?
Apple’s popular iPhone AirDrop is currently being criticized by some security experts, saying that the newly discovered system flaw could leak consumers’ email addresses, phone numbers, and other sensitive information. This is not new since other tech giant manufacturers’ products are also not perfect.
If you are not an iPhone user or owns a smartphone but don’t use the popular iPhone AirDrop, this advanced mobile gadget capability allows you to share and receive documents, photos, audios, and other files with other Apple devices connected to your handset. Since it is really popular with iPhone users, the current security issue is a big deal.
The involved security researchers collaborated with the members of the Secure Mobile Networking Lab (SEEMOO), as well as the Cryptography and Privacy Engineering Group (ENCRYPTO). Because of the new iPhone AirDrop issue, they alerted the tech giant manufacturer way back in 2019.
However, the developer of the iPhone AirDrop feature didn’t respond regarding the said security flaw. Security experts said that “as an attacker, it is possible to learn the phone numbers and email addresses of AirDrop users – even as a stranger.” They added that “all they require is a Wi-Fi-capable device and physical proximity to a target that initiates the discovery process by opening the sharing pane on an iOS or macOS device.”
iPhone AirDrop’s issue
The involved researchers explained that iPhone AirDrop’s current flaw is a notorious one since it is associated or linked with digital harassment. Specifically, harassers used the feature for cyber-flashing, wherein a stranger bombards a victim’s phone with unwanted photos of a sexual or graphic nature — and sending images associated with white supremacists to people just going about their own business in public.
