Are your children playing ‘Roblox’? If yes, here’s a warning for all parents out there. A new report reveals that the platform is currently ‘unsafe’ for its players, especially children. Here’s why.
Popular gaming platform, Roblox, is now under a deeper security controversy after researchers from a security site named CyberNews accuses the platform as ‘unsecured.’ Roblox then, immediately answered back against claims and said that they had already fixed the mentioned security flaws in their system, a long time ago. But, is it really safe for children to play Roblox?
Is Roblox safe?
In a TechRadar report on Saturday, May 1, Roblox explained their side against CyberNews’ claims that their platform is ‘unsafe’ for children. In regards to the article they published, a Roblox spokesperson reiterated that their developers have been focusing in giving high-quality security for all its players, regardless of their age.
In answer towards the mentioned security flaws, the spokesperson added that these claims were not “real risk to users’ data privacy.”
“One claim was inaccurate and the other three pertained to inactive code not used on the Roblox platform. Regardless, we deleted the inactive code as part of our commitment to the security and the safety of our users,” they added.
The CyberNews report
Before the month of April ended, CyberNews researchers published a report highlighting the question of whether Roblox is really secured as a gaming platform. Turns out, according to their research, the platform is not as secured as they intend to be.
The agency claims that over 100 million players in Roblox could have their data compromised, just by using the platform itself. And as we all know, the majority of the players in Roblox are ages 9 to 15. This triggered CyberNews to report their findings on the developers. Here’s what they found:
Hackers can inflitrate Roblox’ accounts through:
- misconfigurations in the Roblox Android manifest file
- inadequate hashing algorithms
- susceptibility to the Janus vulnerability
- hardcoded API keys
All in this together, CyberNews alleges that the gaming platform is unsafe with its possible presence of hackers and predators looking for younger victims online. They also reiterated that “the threat to player security is very real.” However, Roblox was said to be ‘unaware’ of these warnings.
“It’s worrying to see a company with decades of development experience, millions of customers and the budget to match, following such security practices,” said Mantas Sasnauskas, Senior Researcher at CyberNews.
“We’re calling on Roblox to address the platform’s security risks as a top priority – these security and privacy practices should be much more rigorous and looked at more thoroughly, especially for a game that has hundreds of millions of users.”
The issue of Roblox being unsafe for children is no longer a brand new information in the online world. Although, the platform’s developers seemed to be doing their best to continue its stable security patch to protect players.
In fact, based on the platform’s ‘For Parents’ tab, the company explains different ways to control security in their platform. First, it has Avatar Clothing Detection. Secondly, a reporting system where anyone can report anyone. Lastly, the Chat Filters which can identify words that are inappropriate and block it through the receiver’s end.
