New computer lines are making its way.
LRZ is making another milestone
In München Germany, the computer giant Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) which is giving us their new update. LRZ is one of the makers of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing GCS. Thus, standing tall in these past few years is currently ranked 15th on the top 500 list.
According to an article in Hpcwire, the 6500-node system is not yet their biggest achievement. In addition, they are expanding their SuperMUG-NG and it’s entering phrase two. This then focused on the advancement in the supercomputer’s AI capacity. Moreover, a partnership with Intel and Lenovo has been confirmed.
As of this moment, SuperMUC-NG has 6336 thin nodes and is having a 2 Intel Xeon “skylake” CPUs with 95 gigabyte memory. Moreover, 144 fat nodes on the same CPU but with 672GB memory per node.
Lastly, it’s having a water cooling system that has a 70 petabyte memory that can send 19.5 Linpack petaflops.
Phase 2 will be experiencing SuperMUC-NG with advanced Intel Xeon “Sapphire Rapid” CPUs. Thus, Intel is planning to add the “Ponte Vecchio” GPU in it alongside Lenovo’s future SD650-I v3 server platform.
Statement from Intel about lrz
According to Raja Koduri, senior VP, chief architect and general manager of architecture, graphics and software:
“We are excited that LRZ chose us to be their partner. The SuperMUC system that is based on Intel’s XPU product portfolio will be of great use. This will stack more incoming advancement in the supercomputer’s performances”.
LRZ serves the enhancement on the demands in the AI systems. Engineering and Physics greatly benefit from this type of system. In addition, HPC and AI serve as a huge demand in the medicine and the humanities sector.
More to expect
Lenovo’s increasing contribution in the field of technology in the European supercomputer system. Lenovo will also be manufacturing all of the SuperMUC-NG phase two in Hungary as an answer to the American and Asian product facilities.
As of this moment, the elements of SUperMUC-NG phase 2 are still in the testing zone of LRZ.
The testing zone is called Bavarian Energy, Architecture, Software Testbed BEAST.
LRZ granted access to the DAOS storage system, this will enable them to get into the GPU-based system. DAOS will also be helped by LRZ experts in their codes and algorithms to improve the supercomputer’s latest abilities.
We are now in the era of technology advancement. Thus, letting poor outdated computers kill your computer activities.
