Could the Beijing-headquartered Xiaomi Corporation be working on a new smartphone with a camera that can rotate internally? Reports say it has just patented the technology to be able to do so.
A recent patent by Xiaomi has people wondering if the multinational Chinese electronics company has a smartphone in the works that might just feature it. Notebookcheck notes that although it has long been anticipated for Xiaomi to eventually release smartphones that sport simultaneously under-screen and concealable selfie cameras, this newest patent suggests that the growing OEM’s vision for its products may be set even further out than speculators have predicted. Now, onlookers and customers alike have yet another exciting camera trend to sit in wait for.
Who found what?
LetsGoDigital was the first to uncover the news of this fascinating Xiaomi patent, and were able to observe that it may in fact be undergoing development as we speak. Its files included regular technical sketches, which were expected, however a few 3D renders of what appeared to be the central focus of this new patent were perhaps the most eye-catching; these are what give the impression that Xiaomi may have already begun work on the project.
According to what has been reported, it appears as though Xiaomi is putting together a smartphone with an under-display camera that also can serve as a concealable tool for taking selfies. Furthermore, this internal camera will actually be a part of the device’s main rear-facing camera arrangement, and that will be made possible with the help of an internal rotatable piece.
With such a device, an owner of this potential Xiaomi smartphone would be able to enjoy a genuine front-facing and full-screen display, entirely untainted by the distracting appearance of punch-holes. Additionally, they would experience the convenience of being able to use that very lens system in addition to their device’s main camera.
As stated in the luckily English-reproduced abstract, a “flip module” is “configured to change the orientation of the first lens”, which will allow it to switch between either the rear or front of this rumored Xiaomi phone.
LetsGoDigital designers have worked up an outline, as can be seen in the photo above, that will help curious spectators get a better visual of the line drawings that were shown in the patent, instead of having to squeeze their brains for a mental image.
In the picture, you will see that the top lens (labeled in the patent as component 103) appears in orange, which indeed hints at how this new Xiaomi smartphone might possess an all-new under-display flip camera. While the flip module on its own could be quite bulky in terms of how much of the device’s room it would take internally, it can still be enhanced to have even multiple lenses, or the entire rear camera system, thus resulting in a very tempting purchase for anybody on the market for a unique smartphone.
It does look like Xiaomi has been putting in the work to get its name out there and give its brand a better standing in the smartphone world. With its growing progress and the potential it holds to produce even more commendable smartphones, those who haven’t had a feel for their products yet may want to take a look at a few of its already available mobile devices, like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10.
