Electric cars are currently one of the cleanest technology in the world. Now, imagine it also has a wireless EV charger. Here’s the upcoming EV tech.
An ex-NASA space scientist decided to work on a new wireless EV charger that could allow you to charge your electric car while moving on the road. If this is true, drivers will no longer need to stop and park their electric cars just to have some power to continue on their road trips.
As of the moment, wireless charging technology is only available on small gadgets such as smartphones, earphones, laptops, and more. Bigger innovations such as boats, cars, and airplanes still don’t have this technology.
But, this could soon be a reality, thanks to the efforts of a group of researchers at Cornell. Khurram Afridi, an associate professor at Cornell, it is currently impossible to release the new wireless EV charger since wireless charging requires a large magnetic field.
Mobile phones and other small devices can only achieve this since they are smaller and less complex compared to the field needed to charge a moving electric vehicle without touching the surface.
Afridi said that “they thought it was not feasible because they did not think of going to the high level of frequencies that I was thinking of.” He added that although this is the case, “that has always been my area of research. It is really my passion to go to very high frequencies and push the technology to its highest potential frequency.”
The new Wireless EV Charging Tech
To solve this issue, Afridi used two insulated metal plates on the ground that are connected to a power line through a matching network and a high-frequency inverter. This could help the new charging tech by creating oscillating electric fields that attract and repel charges in the pair of metal plates, which would be attracted to the underside of the vehicle.
Aside from this, it can also drive high-frequency current through the circuit on the vehicle, which rectifies it and charges the battery. This new technology is called the active variable reactance or AVR rectifier. This new system can provide full power when passing over the charging plates. The great thing about this new wireless charging tech is that it can charge your EV even if the plate on the vehicle and the plate on the road aren’t completely aligned. It even delivers power to vehicles with more ground clearance.
However, this invention is still incomplete. The researchers haven’t released aby update yet on where and when will it be rolled out. On the other hand, Tesla also didn’t confirm if they will also adopt the new idea of wireless charging technology. Right now, the best thing you can do is always charge you EV before going on a very long trip and plan your route ahead of travel date so that you can easily know if there are nearby charging stations before you run out of power.
