Sick of using Cortana? Here’s the key to make it go away.
Are you currently using Microsoft’s virtual assistant, Cortana? Are you planning to remove the voice feature permanently from your computer? If all your answers yes, here’s the quick guide on how you can do it.
How to delete Cortana?
Sorry to say, not everyone likes the idea of a virtual assistant on computers, especially Cortana. If that’s you, you’re not alone. Most people don’t use voice assistants such as Alexa or Cortana due to various reasons. Whatever reason you have, here is how you can do it permanently.
First off, it’s important to understand that deleting and removing Cortana completely are not the same thing. Majority of Microsoft users only delete the app of Cortana from their computers, then experiencing a massive glitch on their device. This is due to the fact that Cortana is made by Microsoft itself, meaning the computer itself needs to be instantly installed with the voice assistant. Now, this is how you can make the app fully disappear from your computer– all thanks to How to Geek.
According to How to Geek, first step you should consider doing before deleting Cortana is to update your Microsoft OS. To do that, just go to Microsoft page and check out the instruction guide on how to do it. Let’s focus more on the Cortana first.
If you’re Windows is already updated with the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004), you are now ready for your next step.
It is important to note that unlike other applications from phones or computer itself, Cortana cannot be uninstalled that easily. In order to do it, you must run a computer command to delete all the trace of the app from the software.
To do this, you need to open the Windows PowerShell from the computer. First launch the software, and click the “Run as administrator” in the right panel to allow it with administrative privileges. Once okay, you will see a screen like this below.
This command prompt will appear after finishing the earlier steps. Once you see this, type the following command in the window (or copy and paste it there):
Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.549981C3F5F10* | Remove-AppxPackage
Then, press Enter to remove Cortana only for the current user. Once you clicked the Enter and nothing happens such as errors, you’re good to go.
Now, if you’re planning to delete it to all users from your computer, type this command:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers -PackageTypeFilter Bundle -name "*Microsoft.549981C3F5F10*" | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
Once finished, just hit Enter again, like the last one.
If you want to know if you’ve done it correctly, you can go to Start menu and use Windows Search to look for Cortana. Since you wiped it off, you must not see the app from your system anymore, or even search results. If there’s none, you have done a great job!
Now, you can live with your Windows without the Cortana’s voice in your computer!
