Loki has come to Disney Plus. But are you really ready to continue his story?
Disney Plus’ Loki has garnered praise on the internet just before its premiere on the streaming platform. The six-episode series will focus on the brother of the Avenger Thor played by Tom Hiddleston, who is a villain with a complex history throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The time travel shenanigans we last saw in the final movie of The Avengers will make Loki’s story even more complicated.
Who is Loki?
Loki was first introduced in the movie Thor in 2011 as the son of Laufey, the Frost Giant king who abandoned him as a baby. The Asgardian king Odin thereafter adopted him to be raised as a prince alongside Thor.
The Mad Titan
Loki was the main villain in the 2012 Avengers, where he enters the service of Endgame’s final villain Thanos who is gathering the Infinity Stones in his plot to wipe half of the life in the universe. As such, he is given the task of demonstrating an alien invasion on Earth as he retrieves the Tesseract for Thanos himself.
In the 2013 Thor, Loki cooperates with his brother in order to stop the Dark Elves after killing Frigga while heroically sacrificing himself to save Thor. However, it was all a trick as Loki shapeshifts into the form of Odin and eventually controls Asgard for his agenda, as the real Odin being put under a spell and is banished to Earth.
This leads to the story of Ragnarok, where Odin dies after revealing the existence of Hela, their sister. After long imprisonment due to her father’s spell, Hela kicks both Thor and Loki out of Asgard and takes the throne for herself. Thor saves Asgard from Hela and his brother joins the other Asgardians as they head for salvation on Earth.
Death by Thanos
After reconciling with each other, Thor and Loki eventually face destruction, where Loki dies at the hands of Thanos himself as he intercepts the ship to get the Tesseract. Loki tries to make use of his trickery to stab Thanos, but he is eventually murdered.
In the Avengers: Endgame, the heroes travel back in time to get the Infinity Stones and undo Thanos’ genocide. One of the groups who traveled to New York in 2012 is tasked to get the Space Stone but messes up. Hence, in the chaos, Loki steals the Tesseract and teleports. Therefore creating the possibility of an alternate timeline that is branched off from the end of the first movie of the Avengers.
From this, we are left with Loki who still has not gone through the character development of his counterpart who eventually dies at the hands of Thanos.
