Reddit Secret Santa, a beloved yearly gift-exchanging tradition on the famed discussion platform, is being scrapped after twelve years, leaving many users cross.
“The front page of the internet” has recently announced that, after this year, it will be doing away with a custom its users have cherished since 2009: Reddit Secret Santa.
According to Metro, Reddit has held this annual present exchange for millions of users across the globe to partake in for almost twelve years now. In fact, it has become so well-known that a number of famous personalities have joined in on it–Snoop Dogg, Bill Gates, and Jimmy Fallon, to name a few.
Nonetheless, hearts were broken and tempers rose when word got out that Reddit Secret Santa would no longer be making it past 2021.
What did the company have to say about it?
Reddit’s reasoning for the sad removal was explained through a statement posted on the platform’s r/announcements subreddit:
“We made the difficult decision to shut down Reddit Gifts and put more focus on enhancing the user experience on Reddit – this includes investing in the foundation of our platform and moderator tools, making it more accessible for people around the world and evolving how people engage with one another,” it reads.
Unfortunately, these words don’t quite seem to cut it for dedicated members of the Reddit community, plenty of which did not hesitate to express heated disapproval of the news.
Among the angered comments that Reddit users have made in response to the announcement was a sarcastic “translation” of the company’s post, worded, “– we weren’t making enough money off this to be worth our time and effort,”.
Another user made known their disappointment by expressing that Reddit Secret Santa was a wonderful community project that the company ate up, but has now practically regurgitated and abandoned.
In Reddit’s defense, this decision was neither a simple nor quickly made one, and that it will be shifting its funds over to centering more of its focus on improving its users’ experience on the platform, such as enhancing accessibility and bettering moderator tools.
The sad stuff doesn’t end there, though. Besides taking down Reddit Secret Santa, the company has also declared that it has now disabled new Reddit Gifts accounts from being created and, moving forward, will also put an end to the ability to buy Elves.
Nevertheless, Reddit said that it does hope that the festive spirit finds a way to carry on and thrive despite these upsetting removals. Apparently, there are already plans for the creation of a replacement in the works.
A population of the community seems to be taking matters into their own hands by putting together a new subreddit called r/newsecretsanta that has already garnered more than 15,000 members.
During times like these, it makes sense how upset people can become about a platform taking down something that served as a beautiful way for strangers worldwide to connect with one another in friendly, uplifting manners. With that said, those partaking in the final Reddit Secret Santa 2021 will probably want to go all out in honor of the tradition’s closing. Some good gift choices could include a $100 Xbox Gift Card or a 2021 HP Stream 14-inch.
