Do you still recall the last time you watched movies with your friends? Probably not. It has been more than a year since the pandemic restrictions started which resulted in establishments like movie theaters to be closed. But you can still make this possible through your own virtual watch party.
Watching movies with your friends and family is definitely one of the best bonding moments you can have. However, this became a struggle since the start of pandemic and with “social distancing” protocols being implemented. Good thing is that technology is able to keep up with the demands of today and still makes it possible. Mashable lists down sites that will allow you to host your very own virtual watch party.
How Does it Work?
Virtual watch parties are now the new way to watch movies with your friends. It works simply by creating an account to certain sites or using an app, then, you will create your own virtual party and invite friends and family that you would like to join. As soon as the Virtual Watch Party begins, you will be sharing the same screen with each other, whether it is from Netflix, Disney+, or other streaming services you use. Some sites and apps also have the functions of video calls and chat while watching.
First site that you can try is Hulu, they have the option for users to select on the Watch Party mode. This mode will allow you to stream titles available on the platform with up to seven people. You get to use a live group chat to talk to all participants while the movie is ongoing. However, there are certain films that will not be viewed with a watch party. Just look for a Watch Party icon near the Play button (a circle with three silhouetted figures).
You can only use this feature for web browsers though. And all participants need to have their own Hulu accounts to participate.
Another virtual watch party site that you can use, but this time, you can host as many as 99 of your friends. This is also used in browsers only and users need to have Prime or Prime Video membership. To use this, you can simply go to the movie you are to stream, click on the Watch Party icon (like a party pooper emoji) to the right of the blue “Watch Now” button.
It will provide you a link that you can share to your squad. From there, you can start streaming and chatting with Amazon’s group chat sidebar with the platform.
If these sites are not enough for you, you can also try Scener. This one is a FREE third-party Chrome extension that you can install for your next virtual watch party. You get to create private, invite-only “rooms” that you can accommodate up to 9 friends with the function of chat, voice, and even video call each other. Given that this is a third-party extension, you are to use various streaming services like Netflix, HBO Go, and HBO Now. If that is not enough, you can also stream YouTube, Vimeo, Disney+, Prime Video, Hotstar, Alamo On Demand, Shudder, Funimation, and HBO Max. More likely, you get to find a movie that you can watch with your friends.
Take note, all participants must install the extension first and have an account of the streaming platform to enter the watch party and stream together.
Other sites that you can try include Twitch, Disney+ GroupWatch, Teleparty, TwoSeven, and Kast. More likely, there would be one or two sites here that you can use. So you can now host your virtual watch party soon and share your experience with us!
