After years in the gaming field, say goodbye to GTA Online on December 16.
Grand Theft Auto 5 has been in the gaming industry for so long. It has been around for years to the point that it can be tiring to hear it. Since GTA 6 is not yet on the market, the developers endlessly put some bizarre ways to add extra fun to the game and its online components. Due to its extended existence, it is hard to grasp its roots, the prologue, and where did it come from. In fact, the series has spanned three generations of consoles. After its long life, GTA Online is shutting down for a few older consoles this year.
Shutting down GTA Online
Rockstar announced that it would discontinue GTA Online support for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. On a side note, the game developer emphasized that Xbox 360 and PS3 users can still enjoy the story mode without limitations.
Plenty of reasons are considered why the developers decided to shut down GTA Online. One reason is its priority in working on GTA 5 next-gen version and the rumored release of GTA 6. Of course, Rockstar would focus more of its resources on the newer versions. Plus, it is not cost-effective to maintain various servers across three different platform generations. It has been so long, too, so it would make so much sense to exclude these servers.
Rockstar announced this news on Twitter, and the fans’ responses are pretty mixed. Some fans have understood other Rockstar games’ budgetary priorities and demands, especially the two recent generations. One user addressed their fellow fans, “You do realize it costs money to keep those servers running.” Meanwhile, other fans expressed their sympathy towards gamers who cannot afford to upgrade to newer systems and platforms. One player remarked, “As someone who didn’t have a PS4 until 2016, I can tell you the game’s price is not the reason why some of those people haven’t upgraded.”
Furthermore, other reactions show apathy towards the news. There are those people who tweeted in the thread, “Nobody cares where’s ‘GTA 6.'” What’s more, another user stated, “Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t mind if you shut down the rest of the ‘GTA Online’ servers too.”
Regardless of the differing opinions, it is evident that gamers still play the game on older consoles. To those who are playing the game on PS3 and Xbox 360, they still have until December 16, 2021, to enjoy GTA Online to their extent.
It is unfortunate news for GTA gamers who are using older consoles to enjoy the game. However, we must accept that things come to an end. Enjoy the game until December 16 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as much as you can.
