Another great news for Google Meet users as the company continuously adds new features. This will create a much better experience for you particularly for education customers. These tools like hand raise, return of YouTube livestreams and live translated captions are to be included in the coming months.
Given the prominence of Online Learning, it is no surprise that Google is creating tools for easier use of teachers, and students. Even other users that specifically use the platform for education purposes will benefit from this.
Updates for Education Users
9to5 Google explained these updates and first on the list is the improved safety and security for users. Sensitive information, especially with students or minors is critical making this step necessary. Hosts of each conference are now allowed the following functions:
- Hand Raise – hosts of conferences, especially teachers find it difficult to manage interaction within the conference. And Google made it simpler and “easier to notice and address” with this hand raise tool. The company created an “updated and improved visual icon and animation on the video tile.” Participants who raised their hand will appear as a dot in the bottom-left corner that expands to show the person’s name. This will show continuous notification and hosts have an option to view everyone who raised their hands and in what order. The hand will be lowered once the participant has already finished talking. These functions are all by default.
- Video Lock – This tool will allow you to turn off everyone’s camera to lessen distractions. Unexpected situations like “something in the background” usually happens. And in this case, you as a host can prevent that from happening.
- Control of Breakout Rooms – as breakout room ends, hosts also have the option to force participants to go back to the main call. In conferences that accommodate a much bigger audience, it is difficult to manage the discussion especially after breakout rooms. Therefore, this tool assures you that everyone will still be there.
- Other Safety Controls – teachers/hosts can also mute and end meetings for everyone, among others controls. Again, it is difficult to manage discussions more so online, therefore, a click of a button to mute everyone will be of great help.
Live Translated Captions
Another update that you can use is the addition of captions. This premium feature is available for users with Google Workspace’s Education Plus tier. Since conferences are also accommodating participants from different parts of the world, you can now listen to one language and also understand it through real-time captions.
The company explains that this tool will be useful most especially in classrooms with multilingual students. There are also times that teachers meet parents who speak a different language. Communication barriers will be lessened with the use of this feature.
Google Meet Livestreams
Last update for this video conferencing platform is an option which is basically an update of “Hangouts on Air”. This feature, which will be available “this year” will allow you to stream your conference on YouTube. It was previously made available for internal domains but is now to be offered especially to cater school events and board meetings.
This collaboration will allow you to reach a much wider audience especially in events that will be for the entire population of your school or company.
All of these Google Meet updates will be available in the coming months. Some of these features are already available in iOS and will be rolled out to Android users soon.
