World Wide Web, the internet’s main system of interlinked hypertext documents, is now turning into an asset as the newest NFT or non-fungible token. The highly-precious computer codes will be auctioned online at Sotheby’s in London. So far, the initial bids for the said product are not yet released by the auction house. Here’s how you can join the bidding.

The beginning of every websites in the world is now on sale for the highest bidder.
The creator of World Wide Web, British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee, announces the said decision to sell the Internet codes. In his statement on Sotheby’s press release, Berners-Lee admitted he does not know what future brings for his creation. However, with the help of NFTs, he wants his discovery to be a helpful tool for other collaborators to innovate technology.
“While I do not make predictions about the future, I sincerely hope its use, knowledge and potential will remain open and available to us all to continue to innovate, create and initiate the next technological transformation, that we cannot yet imagine. NFTs, be they artworks or a digital artefact like this, are the latest playful creations in this realm, and the most appropriate means of ownership that exists. They are the ideal way to package the origins behind the web.”
Berners-Lee, 66, first invented the World Wide Web in 1989. This was also the beginning wherein people finally used internet system to help them in their daily lives.
World Wide Web bidding
If you’re one of the interested bidders on the said auction, you might want to expect to lash millions worth of dollars, if you want to win. The sale started last June 23 and will end on Wednesday, June 30. Bidding had already reached $2.8 million this Friday, June 26. All bidders have to pass the minimum amount they can bid amounting to $1,000.
The winner will own the highly-precious animated version of Berners-Lee’s nearly 10,000 lines of code and a letter from the British-born computer scientist himself. It is expected that the $2.8 million current highest bid could still go higher once the last day of bidding comes to an end.
Sotheby’s gratefulness on Berners-Lee
Auction house Sotheby’s expressed their gratefulness for Berners-Lee in choosing their place to have the said NFT auction. According to Cassandra Hatton, vice-president at Sotheby’s, they were amazed on how NFTs have become a major trend for people. She was quoted saying, “we at Sotheby’s could not be more proud to be part of a celebration of this defining moment three decades on.”
“[NFT] changed every aspect of your life,” Hatton said. “We don’t even fully comprehend the impact that it has on our lives, and the impact that we will continue to have on our lives.”
