Tesla Superchargers Could Soon Be Used By Other EV Makers

Tesla Superchargers could soon support other electric car brands. Elon Musk already showed some hints regarding the upcoming innovation.

Tesla confirmed that it will soon allow other electric car makers to use its popular Supercharger Network. For the past few years, Superchargers across the globe have been exclusive of Elon Musk’s advanced electric vehicles.

It might sound selfish, but this is reasonable since Tesla is an independent company that relies on its own technology. Now, Musk confirmed that its giant Supercharger Network can soon be used by other EV brands. However, the company didn’t disclose the exact electric car models it will support.

Some Tesla drivers might be disappointed since the Superchargers will soon accommodate more electric cars than usual. This could make them wait in line until they can charge their automobiles. However, the decision of Elon Musk will really help his company when it comes to expanding its partnership with other EV makers.

Tesla Supercharger Network is a huge advantage over other cars. Thanks to this EV charging tech, many electric car owners can do road trips outside their town without worrying about running out of battery. Aside from Elon Musk’s EV company, there are also other electric charger developers that are expanding their innovations. These include Electrify America and other brands.

Supercharger Network’s Expansion

Tesla seems sometimes to be the only company to understand charging. They built the charging network very early on and offered it free to early buyers. Any EV with 200 miles can handle driving around its hometown, never charging anywhere but at its home.

However, for those who can’t charge their Tesla cars at home, advanced fast-charging stations are essential. Elon Musk already knew this issue a long time ago. Because of this, he and his company decided to work on building their network as a free service to help sell cars.

It’s obvious if you go out on an EV road trip, where you sometimes see the automaker’s charging stations in the same parking lot as CCS fast-charging stations from Electrify America and others. Elon Musk’s EVs are often many, the other stations more often sit unused. Until recently it’s been rare to see anything but a Tesla out in the rural countryside on a road trip.

Aside from this, there is also another challenge that other automaker companies are currently facing. This is specifically when it comes to maintaining their charging stations. Unlike them, Elon Musk’s EV company doesn’t have this issue.

Thanks to the automaker’s efforts, it now makes big stations with from 8 to 40 chargers, so having one or two out of service is never a big deal. Other charging stations tend to have just 2 or 4 chargers. The initial stations were only 50kw, though new stations go up to 350kw on CCS for cars that can handle them.

The early charging stations developed by Elon Musk were almost all 150kw outside of cities, and now are 250kw, which almost all Teslas can handle at least 200kw of. Based on these details, the giant Supercharger Network of the company will certainly be a great help to other EVs.

However, this comes with a price. Elon Musk’s automaker announced that it will have to share the costs of its Supercharger stations with other companies that want to use it. But, this will certainly happen since various EV makers are now growing than ever since many people now want to use electric cars instead of gas-based vehicles.

The upcoming innovation of Elon Musk is expected to take place this coming 2022. However, this could still be changed depending on the issues that the company could face in the coming months.
