Telegram has previously stated that it will “focus on bringing secure group video calls in 2020” when it was not yet a significant competitor to WhatsApp in terms of numbers. Since then, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge. Telegram even threatened to overtake WhatsApp for a brief period thanks to a blunder on privacy by the Facebook-owned network.
However, the expected group video call, which would have allowed it gather even more numbers in these lockdown numbers, never happened.
But at last, Telegram announced in its most recent update that group video calls will be available on all devices, including tablets and desktops.
It also stated that while audio-only participants in group calls are unlimited, the first 30 people who join a group call have the option to switch to video.
By choosing the ‘Share my video’ option in any active session, users can make group video calls. Telegram has stated that this restriction will be increased soon as voice chats expand to include streaming games, live events, and much more.
Is it better to be late than never?
While these new capabilities are obviously beneficial to Telegram users, they are also a little late, a nalysts believe. Telegram may have made even more inroads if it had been introduced at the height of the pandemic, when people were looking for quick and easy solutions for secure group calls.
It could also have helped it strengthen its position if it had come at a time when the atmosphere was clearly against WhatsApp, when thousands of users were abandoning it in favor of Telegram. Since there are more features, there are more attractions.

Telegram Now Has Animated Backgrounds And Other New Features
But don’t fret, Telegram has also introduced a few new features in addition to group video calls. Users can also share their screens during a video call. That should help.
By simply touching the menu button and selecting the screen sharing option, followed by app permission, you can use the screen-sharing feature. Telegram has now added a noise suppression option in order to improve the quality of the speech. During a live voice chat, this feature can be turned on. Users can also pin a video to keep it focused as more people join the call using video.
Apart from video calling, Telegram has also added Animated Backgrounds, which are said to be gradient wallpapers that move every time you send a message and are designed algorithmically.
More animated backgrounds can be found under Settings. Change the chat background on Android by going to Chat Settings > Change Chat Background. Appearance > Chat Background on iOS.
Telegram has this feature as well as a number of pre-installed themes.
Users have the option of creating their own background and sharing it with others.
