Do you know the man named Mircea Popescu?
Aside from billionaire Elon Musk, who is fascinated by the creation of cryptocurrencies, a 41-year-old Romanian man named Mircea Popescu was once considered as the ‘Father of Bitcoin Toxicity.’ Unfortunately, the same man who was also an early adopter of Bitcoin, was recently found dead by being drowned off the coast of Costa Rica near Playa Hermosa.
Who was Mircea Popescu?
Mircea Popescu was one of the earliest man in the world who invested in the idea of cryptocurrency. In fact, his digital assets are reportedly worth $2 billion. On Monday morning of June 28, the reports circulated online that his body was found in the coast. The autopsy of his body was not revealed by the investigators– so it’s not sure whether he was killed and thrown in the coast, or he had taken his own life by jumping off the water.
What’s more interesting for crypto fans is where Popescu hides his digital assets, and where they are right now. In 2012, the deceased billionaire created MPex, a ‘Bitcoin securities exchange.’ Ever since then, he had been earning millions of money from cryptocurrencies.
Unfortunately, rumors suggest that the said $2 billion worth of Bitcoin is now missing. They also reported that even the close relatives of Popescu do not have any idea on his digital assets. If this is found to be true, the value of their Bitcoin may not be counted as valuable anymore.
“It looks like that with the deaths of Mircea Popescu and John McAfee a significant amount of $BTC might be lost forever. RIP” said by one Twitter account regarding Popescu’s death.
Why was he called ‘Father of Bitcoin Toxicity’?
If you’re not familiar with the name of Mircea Popescu, you’re not alone. For early adopters of cryptocurrency, Popescu was called the ‘Father of Bitcoin Toxicity.’ He was identified as this name due to his toxic attitude towards other people. Before his death, Popescu was also known as a racist and sexist man. One of his statements said women’s purpose is to just eulogize men.
“Bitcoin is fate. It operates completely outside of any human agency. For all you know about [bitcoin creator Satoshi] Nakamoto, bitcoin might as well have created itself,” he wrote in one of his posts. “Bitcoin can kill all your friends and all the people you respect… It can poop in your drink and rape your pets… If lightning strikes where you sit, whether you feel a warm cozy sort of love or the most burning hatred imaginable is strictly irrelevant – electricity stays.”
Other messages on Twitter also eulogize Popescu such as Riccardo Spagni, who is widely known in the crypto community, who says, “Mircea Popescu died last week. He was a thoroughly unlikeable person, who taught me so much about Bitcoin.”
John McAfee death
Just like Popescu, another crypto early adopter John McAfee also died in a Spanish cell last week. Reports said that suicide could be the main reason for his death. Although, official reports have not yet confirmed this information.
