Netflix’s The Sandman is officially in production!
The production and filming of Netflix’s The Sandman are finally on the way. A set photo from the set revealed the first look at the main character, the Death of Endless, who will be played by the actress Kirby Howell-Baptiste. The photos were taken in London where the shooting is currently underway. It contains the actress clad in a black costumer, which seems to convey a Goth style similar to the outfits worn by Death in The Sandman’s comic series. Furthermore, the photos also provided a quick look at Dream, who will be played by Tom Sturridge.
While we are all excited about the news, there was actually a backlash that surrounded the casting of Kirby Howell-Baptiste as the main character in The Sandman. According to some fans, the pale skin tone of Death in the comics is crucial. Hence, the casting of a black actress for the role is appropriate. However, producer and author Neil Gaiman himself supported the actress, responding that he spent 30 years in the battle against bad movie productions of The Sandman, and viewers should simply watch the show for themselves and decide whether the actress is a perfect fit, instead of judging whether Death is white enough.
Up to date, there have been various teasers about the Netflix production of the comics, which has given fans curiosity and intrigue to watch The Sandman. Netflix released a production video that detailed the design of the production as well as its actors. Even Gaiman himself seemed happy about the way that Netflix is producing the show. Moreover, he was excited at the creative effort shown by Netflix as per his interview at Comicbook.com in the previous year.
