Fans of foldable phones have a lot to look forward to in the next months: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be released in the coming weeks, we may see a Google Pixel Fold soon, and now it appears that a Vivo foldable will be released later this year as well.
Vivo started working on its own foldable smartphone a few months ago. Even before that, images of a Vivo folding phone with a small flexible display have surfaced, and now the Chinese OEM may soon add foldable and rollable phones to the NEX series. The Vivo V21 was the most recent Vivo series that we recall.
It was first introduced in April, and it comes with a 44MP OIS selfie camera. The company appears to be on track to join the foldable phone category alongside Xiaomi, Samsung, and Motorola. It’ll be interesting to see how a Vivo folding phone turns out. It is likely to assist in lowering the cost of foldable smartphones. In China, Vivo is rumored to have applied for three additional trademarks: NEX Slide, NEX Fold, and NEX Roll.
According to Ice Universe, a well-known and typically accurate tipster, the Vivo Nex Fold will be released before the end of 2021. The more traditional Vivo Nex 5 smartphone, according to the same source, will not be released this year.
On the same Twitter thread, display analyst Ross Young — another insider with a good track record – predicts the Nex Fold won’t be released until January 2022. He goes on to say that in terms of panel size, it will be the largest foldable of its kind yet.
That narrows down the timeframe for when the Vivo Nex Fold will be released, whether it’s around the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022. It’s also feasible that the phone may be introduced in 2021 before going on sale in 2022, or that it will be released in stages depending on region.
The forecast that the Vivo Nex Fold will have the largest panel for this design factor is intriguing: it would be bigger than the current record holder, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold, which has an 8.01-inch display. With an 8-inch screen, the Huawei Mate X2 isn’t far behind.
If the Vivo Nex Fold has a larger display, we’re definitely going into tablet territory, which is part of the appeal of foldable phones in the first place — the benefits of a tablet screen on a device that still fits in your pocket (just about). For example, the latest iPad Mini has a 7.9-inch display.
Regrettably, we don’t know much else about the Vivo Nex Fold at this time, but we’re confident that more information will become available in the coming months. Internal specifications should be on the top end of the scale, with a price tag to match.
For now, all eyes are on Samsung’s upcoming foldables. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 (with a rumored screen size of 6.7 inches) and Galaxy Z Fold 3 (7.5 inches), as well as a handful of Galaxy smartwatches and the Galaxy Buds 2, are slated to be released in August.
