OnePlus is allegedly reducing the performance of popular Android applications in 9 base model and 9 Pro model to increase their battery capacities.
A new smartphone test claimed that OnePlus is currently reducing the performance of the most popular applications in its 9 base mode and 9 Pro phones. The experiment was conducted by Andrei Frumusanu, one of the researchers at Anandtech, a popular website for testing various gadgets.
The researchers involved in the latest OnePlus experiment explained that “benchmarks and performance measurements are a main-stay of evaluation of devices and integral parts of the review process for a lot of people – including both actual consumers as well as publications or analysts as ourselves.”
They added that “today’s piece fits within this class of articles, and more specifically covers OnePlus’ newest 9 Pro flagship phone, and how its performance behavior indeed manages to be extremely unique in the current mobile landscape. It’s something so unusual and baffling, as it truly blurs the line between battery optimization, performance cheating, and general device specification misrepresentation.”
In conclusion, the OnePlus is blacklisting popular applications away from its fastest cores, causing a slowdown in typical workloads such as web browsing. The site tested Chrome and Twitter performance extensively but concluded that the slowdown “applies to pretty much everything that has any level of popularity in the Play Store.
Apps that Is Being Weakened
The applications involved in OnePlus blacklisting are Microsoft Office apps, Google apps, as well as web browsers, and other social media apps. On the other hand, Genshin Impact mobile and other similar games are reportedly unaffected.
OnePlus is not the only smartphone manufacturer using this artificial boosting performance. There are also other giant tech firms using this method for the past few years. However, their names were not disclosed.
Going back to the giant phone maker, Geekbench confirmed that it has removed 9 and 9 Pro from its Android Benchmark chart since the company is allegedly conducting benchmark manipulation. On the other hand, the smartphone creator defended its activity, saying that the app performance manipulation is intended to improve the battery life of its phones battery life.
The giant phone maker explained that its “top priority is always delivering a great user experience with our products, based in part on acting quickly on important user feedback. Following the launch of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro in March, some users told us about some areas where we could improve the devices’ battery life and heat management.”
On the other hand, the phone maker insisted that its manipulation method doesn’t negatively affect the mentioned apps since they are still functioning properly. It also added that it claimed that aside from increasing the battery life of its advanced smartphones, this technique could also improve internal functionalities of its 9 base model and 9 Pro model.
As of the moment, the giant phone maker did not confirm if it will remove this app blacklisting method.
