The world’s first flying motorcycle, developed by Jetpack Aviation, has aced its test run and is now up for pre-ordering at a starting price of $380,000.
The Los Angeles-based micro personal vertical take off and landing (VTOL) company, Jetpack Aviation, could soon be making huge strides towards commercializing the once merely imaginable flying motorcycle.
The concept of life-saving flying ambulances is one that has yet to be fully actualized, however, once Jetpack Aviation’s all new flying motorcycle (the Speeder) is launched, the world could find that it might just have all the potential benefits of a flying car to boast.
To back this up, dlmag notes that JPA’s Speeder flying motorcycle has already completed, with impressive success, the initial test flight from its 1/3rd scale prototype known as P1.
Reports say that the company succesfully finished five months worth of testing earlier in May this year. Through this completed process, Jetpack Aviation managed to obtain particular benchmarks regarding the Speeder’s takeoff, hover, climb, and even turning capabilities.
Of course, being marketed as a jet-powered VTOL aircraft, JPA claims that being on the speeder “will be just like riding a motorcycle but in the sky!”
More interestingly, the Speeder is probably going to come in two different models, namely: the Recreational Speeder, and the Military/Commercial model. What can we expect from each?
The JPA Recreational Speeder
Although the name already gives it away, the Recreational configuration of the Speeder is meant to provide its users with an unmatched means of personal transportation.
JPA’s recreational Speeder is designed to be a 125cc motorcycle that is perfectly able to fly up to 15,000ft at speeds reaching 150mph. The vehicle is capable of vertical takeoff from just about any location that can accomodate the area that a small car requires.
It is stabilized to ensure that users will be able to control it without much pilot training, nor will they need a pilot’s license in order to operate it. In fact, Jetpack Aviation itself will be providing all the training one may need to get familiar and comfortable with the Recreational Speeder.
JPA Military/Commercial Speeder
This particular model, on the other hand, appears to be more reflective of Jetpack Aviation’s more serious ambitions. The Military/Commercial Speeder is optimized for clients that are involved with the government, military, or other commercial bodies, to be utilized either autonomously or manually.
This particular Speeder is meant to have the ability to transform into a cargo carrier from a pilot-only aircraft in less than 10 minutes; to do so, the machine slides the pilot seat out and replaces it with a cargo pod.
Nonetheless, both the Military/Commercial and Recreational JPA Speeders are going to be more or less resemblant of each other in terms of physical appearance, with their most significant difference being in their total thrust.
As Jetpack Aviation details, the recreational variant of the Speeder is capable of producing approximately 700lbs of thrust, whilst the industrial Military/Commercial model will be able to achieve 1,200lbs thrust.
Present technology is reaching more and more futuristic heights by the day. For anyone with the right budget who thinks they could make good use out of something as seemingly ahead of its time as a flying motorcycle, JPA is now accepting pre-orders for the Speeder. Just make sure to have at least $380,000 ready!
