Dragon Age is expected to be released in 2023.
Dragon Age 4 may not have shown up at EA Play Live 2021, but a new report may explain why — and when we’ll be able to play BioWare’s highly anticipated fantasy RPG.
Sources familiar with the video game’s production informed GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb that the new Dragon Age is on schedule for release in 2023, according to a report by GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb. The report was met with silence from EA.
According to the report, EA withheld a Dragon Age 4 demo at EA Play Live 2021 in order to “get the game into position to begin marketing in earnest.”
Furthermore, the source backs up Bloomberg’s earlier this year report that BioWare has decided to abandon plans for a Dragon Age 4 live-service model in favor of making the upcoming Dragon Age a single-player game, similar to its predecessors. However, similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition, the source suggests that Dragon Age 4 would include an online multiplayer component.
Dragon Age 4 will be released in 2023, which corresponds to EA’s earlier statements. EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen revealed on an earnings call in 2019 (via Eurogamer) that the video game “probably comes after fiscal ’22,” implying that the new Dragon Age won’t be released until April 2022, the start of the next fiscal year.
Even if it sounds like a long time away, the fact that Dragon Age 4 may be on pace for a 2023 release is actually excellent news. A number of games have been delayed in the past year due to development challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic, and PS5 and Xbox Series X systems have been tough to come by.
However, by the time Dragon Age 4 is released, those difficulties should have been resolved, implying that Dragon Age 4 won’t be delayed – though that isn’t a guarantee right now – and that more players will have had access to the new consoles (which EA could exclusively, alongside PC, choose to target).
When queried about the release date, an EA spokeswoman simply stated that the business has no intentions to publish that information at this time. Official game updates have also been few, and while EA and BioWare have given some information, the majority of it has been concept art or unfinished footage.
If we’re expecting Dragon Age 4 in 2023, marketing will most likely kick out in early 2022, with more information on what to anticipate from the next Dragon Age game – and how it’ll take advantage of the current platform hardware. While Dragon Age 4 was not present at EA Play Live 2021, we anticipate a substantial upgrade during EA Play Live 2022.
The presence of a Dragon Age file discovered on the PlayStation Store could support the 2023 release date. It’s unclear what it is, but the general consensus is that it’s some kind of demo or alpha build, implying that development has progressed to the point where at least some of the game is playable.
